Post subject:  Remembering Names

I'm bad with names. Even people I've known since I was a kid I forget. One of the greatest gifts God gave me was the ability to retain a high level of information and usually the first time I hear or see it. That's what makes it so weird. I see people all the time that speak to me and hug me in public and call me by my name and I have to find some way to bullshit my way through that encounter. I recognize the faces most of the time and usually know where I know them from but I have no clue what their names are. My kids have picked up on the fact that I don't know names even though I try my best to hide that. "Daddy you don't know who that is do you?" NO!  What's the problem?

You have people hugging you all the time in public?

I'm anti-hugging. My wife's family is all about the welcoming hug so I've made some exceptions with the good-looking relatives.

Yes! For some odd reason they look so happy to see me when they are doing it. That's what makes me feel bad. I've only had 1 who said "you don't know who I am do you" and I was honest.

Is this because I got chubb that one time? I told you it was just my pants.

I know your name now. At one time I couldn't remember it and waited for someone to call you and then I started to use it.

Really? It's easy. And I won't forget your name, Earl, because you are soooo you.

It is. That's my point. If you asked me about some meaningless thing that happened I could tell you but will forget a name as simple as yours.

I'm real bad with looking at people when I'm busy and engaging in conversation. Especially with the gf. She complains all of the time about me being on the computer while she's telling me her boring ass story of the day.

You hope this doesn't get back to her.

Who on this board could possible be so petty and small to share something like that with her?

youre just not trying. i do the same thing. i hear someones name and i think "oh ill remember that"

not how it works. the reason you remember daily information is because you are excited about it. you are not excited about these people. youll never say to yourself "katie. she doesnt look like tom cruises ex but id still fuck that tight little ass with my face"

I don't know what it is. I've tried to write them down in some places. I was at a thing last week and the only person name I could remember was an Asian guy. That's because I didn't understand what he said his name was and I looked down at his card he handed me instead of asking again.

Nas, you just need some word association skills.
See, I remember your name, Gus, because you had Gas the first time I met you.
Gus. Gas. See?

I'm really bad when I need to know their name. It seems like when I don't need to know it, I remember, but when I need to ask them something it's like "Hey... uh... hey, you... um..."

 Depending on who and where I'll just put my hand on their shoulder and ask the question. I almost never ask them to repeat their name.

I would never do that. There are ways around not remembering a name and I use them but it still bothers me that I even forget the names of people I grew up with and saw practically everyday for more than half my life.

When you meet someone repeat their name

Nice to meet you, Hawg Ass.

Saying it aloud works wonders with memory

The best trick is to associate the name with a persons attributes.

For instance, Bill is the bald headed unibrow guy. He is Chief BillybaldBrow

Had a meeting this morning with two guys and I forgot the ones guy name after like two minutes.

The called the other guy the wrong name.

Good times.

That's what's so funny.

I thought I had the right name. I called him Joe and because of this thread I just checked the email and his name was Rob.
