Post subject:  Going out...

I've been divorced for about a month now and I'm starting to feel that emptiness that comes with not being in a relationship; after 5 years of working, school, and my wife, I have a big void in my life that I need to fill. I don't really have any friends; I have one but she's married and I see her maybe once a month. What I'm looking to do is to get out and make friends; I've been to a sports bar that's good for the Bears, but I'm looking for bars that draw crowds for the other teams. I'm also rusty at the dating game; I'm 34 so I think I've outgrown the clubs and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions where the best places are to starting dating again.

I would guess online is the best answer?

Hell just keep refreshing this thread and you'll probably get ad-banners for all the sites.

Online dating isn't a bad option.
In terms of friends, I'm rather introverted/socially awkward so I can understand where you are coming from so here's an idea: go to a board outing. I went to one and everyone was pretty cool. If I was living in Chicago, I would go to more.

You could probably find some good Hawks bars but they will probably be full of crusty old guys. You're the same age as me so I would say if there are some good micro brew focused bars around you I would hit up those. They tend to get a diverse crowd and have more of a community feel to them. Since beer is the focus it is a built in icebreaker.

I wanted to go to the McNugget challenge but I had to drive to Missouri that day...I have the weekends off now so I will definitely attend some of them.

Appreciate it man.

Online dating didn't really work for me, but I'm a hermit.

One of my cousins actually met his now wife online, so for somewhat normal people I guess it can work.

Online dating to me always carried a negative stigma but as I have gotten older this seems like a more viable option...

Mr. Drebin,

Start living your life the way you want to. Go see some concerts, get a regular social calendar. Make a friend with a bartender. Ask them when and where all the white women at?? And ladies of all backgrounds for that matter. Start doing stuff by yourself, then when you meet or develop a dialogue with the chicks out there do the following. Say to potential date, "I'm going to (fill in the blank), who you like to join me?" The thought process here is guys will only go if a girl joins them. Fuck that bullshit. You are going to where ever and inviting them to join you. Start buying two concert/game/event tickets if you can. That is key, you are doing stuff and asking them to come along. The "I'll only go if I have a date, and won't if I am riding solo", that is a losers mentality.

Thanks for the advice don...trying to get out more by buying tickets to see the Bulls, Hawks, and WWE over the next 3 months. Will try the invitation tactic when the time is right.

I'm married (no kids) but don't really go out anymore. Virtually Every Friday August through May I'm occupied with coaching. Most of my friends have little kids and don't go out much now. Others have moved away and I lost touch with. Sat nights when my wife is off we go out, when she works I tend to drink on my couch. I dread the summer and the idle time since I stopped playing softball three years ago. Started golfing again do to shear boredom towards middle of summer this year so maybe next summer will increase that.
