We HAVE to go to a wedding next May. It's in Paris. We HAVE to go. I'm indifferent...b/c I'm cheap. I took French in h.s. for 3 years and I'm 6 hours short of an art history minor, my Mom is a professional artist...so, I can (and will) appreciate the architecture and art. ya know, I studied that shit...We HAVE to go! So, any of you kids have occasion to visit this place? |

Don't wear white gym shoes. Since you have an appreciation for art and architecture I think you will enjoy it very much. |

Did these plans come up after your nuptials were planned? If so, dick move on their part. Visit Jim Morrison's grave. I have no desire to go to Europe unless I'm going to St Andrews to golf, so good luck Doug. |

Oui. French food sucks. Don't drive there. Don't pay the guy in front of the Eiffel Tower 10 bucks to take your picture with a Polaroid. One of my favorite things to do in Europe is just to see old stuff. Living in the US you hardly see anything older than 200 years old. Seeing stuff from the 14th century and earlier always impresses me. |

Alls I know is that in Paris skunks seem to fall in love with black cats that have an unfortunate accident resulting in a white stripe along their back and then they act all Beardown until the end of the reel. |

I've never been to Paris, but my Grandma has been many times and talks about it alot. The main thing everyone knows about is how they're anti-American. They HATE Americans and according to my Grandma, it's not just a myth. She says some of her friends even pretend they're Canadian. She says there's no need for that though as long as you just make an effort to give a shit about their ways, which is something I guess that most American tourists don't do. You say you know some French, which is great. Use it. Even if you try to speak in awful, broken French, they'll appreciate the effort and be nicer to you. She's seen a citizen point an American in the wrong way after asking directions because the American was speaking in english in an asshole way (Like why won't you understand me, bitch tone). Be nice and respectful towards their culture and all will be good. You should have a great time being into art and all. I've always wanted to go. Oh, and yea, leave the white gym shoes at home. |

You can go anywhere on the Metro...the best subway system in the world. You cannot cover the Louvre in a day. The building is larger than just about anything you've ever seen. You will need to ask for ice in your Coke...they will serve it at room temperature. Plan on spending 2+ hours at each meal. You almost have to beg to get the check. Oh, the crypts at Notre Dame are pretty cool. |

I went this summer. You can put me in the list of people that never wanted to go and hates France. Ended up loving it. One of my favorite place I have visited. Some things you should know/do: 1. Unlike every other European city you may ever go to, in Paris they do not speak English. They may understand it. They may know how to speak it. But they do not give a shit and will not help you. Definitely try to speak French as much as you can. You will be able to figure out the rest. I don't know shit about speaking French, but even with that, I felt people were pretty nice. 2. Definitely go picnic at the Eiffel Tower and Champs de Mars. Go early evening to get a spot and stay for the light show starting at 9 PM. 3. I didn't find the restaurants that great, but going to the local bakeries and produce places was great. Fresh produce was great. The crepes and breads were outstanding. Plus its a nice slice of culture. 4. Even it you don't really appreciate art (I do not), go to the Musee d'Orsay. Not only is the building cool, but they have some famous pieces there that are cool to look at. 5. The Louvre sucks ass. Hot as shit. Only thing to see there is the Mona Lisa. Just go straight to that, take a picture and leave. 6. Walk along the bridges at the river. Very nice setting. Look at all the fucking locks on the fences. 7. There are a lot of great parks around Paris that are great for just relaxing. Pretty much everyone in Paris hangs out at the parks. Lazy french. 8. Eat macaroons. Worth it in Paris. 9. See the other sites. Don't actually tour them. Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triumph. All cool to see, waste of time to tour. 10. If you have time go to Versailles and tour the grounds. Screw the inside. Those lines are ridiculous. If you have seen one opulent Euro palace you have seen them all. But tour the grounds. Rent a golf cart and take that around. Much better. 11. DO NOT TAKE TAXIS. THEY WILL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOU. Use the rail system instead. Basically, in Paris, don't waste time with "touring". Spend more time relaxing and enjoying the views. Wake up, hit the markets, buy some food and booze, then go to the parks and picnic. |

doug - evergreen park wrote: Any tips or tricks? lovely sophisticated city and you will never be able to take in all the major sites in just a few days while also having to attend a wedding easy walking city...as said, public transportation can get you anywhere but walk a lot because it is really just a wonderful place to be in I didn't find anyone rude. I would say they have a kind of big city indifference to you rather than an active dislike. have a plan for the louvre, no way to see it all in a week of days so just see what you want to see, agreed on d'orsay and would add l'orange I was a student so never went to sit down restaurants. You will do well with baguettes and local food stores...and there is one on just about every block. I love doner kabobs which are street food with Turkish origins and kind of like gyros. I highly recommend Versailles, which is suburban Paris and can be accessed by a very short train ride. Great city and it is romantic so bring condoms |

I love threads like this. It's always: Paris is amazing, except for the 5-15 things that are absolutely horrible. |
