and probably Tuesday too. I don't remember ever having four days off of school for cold weather before.

We got out of school only for snow, not cold. We went when the temp could only be measured in Kelvin.

I was surprised at how many parents were pissed off about schools not canceling faster cause of the cold a couple of weeks ago.

They probably wanted to know for sure that they didn't have to drop Johnny and Janie off at school in the cold weather. There are a lot of parents out there that have a good amount of time dedicated to drop off and pick up of the kids at school. For a lot of them the school drop off/pick up organizes their whole day.

The truth is that the parents should probably just keep them home whether the school decides to cancel or not. I'm sure some parents who pay for childcare when school kids are not in school aren't happy.

The first time they canceled school the Chicago Public Schools were fairly late in the game before they called off classes. They've probably learned their lesson this time.

I feel like we were a late cancel this time.

We had school cancelled in college once. That was awesome!

75% of the kids who dont go to school today, the parents will take them for lunch and maybe something else. LOL

I get the part of kids not waiting for a bus or walking to school, but doesnt this just cause more problems for parents?

All it takes is one kid to get frostbite because he is standing outside waiting for a bus or walking to school, and in addition to the lawsuit you would have parents bitching up a storm about why the schools were open.

Its a no win situation for almost everybody, but if you're a parent you have to deal with these things. It sucks to have to take a day off work or pay for daycare or whatever, but thats part of the job that comes with being parent. I see people upset on Facebook over this, and I always think what would happen if your kid woke up sick in the middle of the night, would you still send them off to school?

A lot of them, yes. But I know for example, St. Charles (and a few other surrounding cities) are out of salt. That's a big part of it too.

Over the next 36 hours or so, its going to be too cold for the salt to even work.

I completely lucked in to it myself, but I wonder if kids these days will be giving extra consideration to jobs where you work from home. So many added benefits.

School superintendents are trained to deal with complicated laws, major budget issues involving with millions of dollars, and any type of unique situation that comes up with staff and student, and yet.....

Nothing they do causes more problems and bitching than the decision to close schools or not. 50% of the community gets pissed off every single time regardless of what they decide to do.

IMO, it's always best to do what is best for the kids on days like this - and a lot of them ride busses. They simply cannot stand outside and wait for a late-running bus on these days.

Why do you care enough to make up a statistic about something so stupid?

Put me in the 25%. My kids can eat what we have here.

Exactly.

As Frank said it is a no win situation, no matter what they decide a large group of people are going to be mad.

And people tend to have a memory that is skewed regarding these things. I see people saying on social media all the time that "we didn't get out of school ever" blah blah blah. I graduated from HS in 94 and we got snow days and I even remember missing almost an entire week of school in like Jan/Feb of 94 because the temperatures got so cold.

Just human nature I guess.

Heaven forbid you stay home for a couple of days and take care of your kid instead of letting the government do it!

Me too, especially after watching the Farmers this weekend.

March 15 is a mere 40 days away. Thats the day I'm hoping to get out and golf. 45-50 and some sun but dry weather is all I'm asking for.

With all that snow that needs to melt, it's going to be like a swamp out there.

It makes sense for the kids who have to walk to school or catch a bus. I anticipated it was going to be an off day and tomorrow probably will too. As others said part of being a parent is understanding that your schedule will get thrown off.
