If you look at what they won medals in it's basically the X-Games type stuff that was added. If you didn't count those newer events away they would have less medals than the top 5 countries. |

Half the country shuts down when an inch or more of snow falls. Of course the US is bad at winter sports |

They're all trust fund babies with nothing else to do. Who else has time to ski their entire life? They probably pay for play too. And all they get is a medal. Terrible for their financial portfolio. |

i enjoy these kinds of discussions where you are asked to disregard anything that negatively affects the point you want to make such as "if you take out everything the U.S. did real good at in the Olympics they were terrible". wow, good analysis. |

I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest that they are getting beat in all the traditional events because they are. |

It's similar to overrating Michael Phelps. Fantastic swimmer and one of the best, if not the best, all-time in his event no doubt. But could he win all those medals if he was running track? If he was running track he'd have a shot at one or possibly two gold medals per Olympics. The fact that certain countries can load up the medals in certain events skews their overall performance. |

And Carl Lewis wouldn't have won anything in a pool, and the Cubs can never win the Stanley Cup. How dense are you? With the naked wrestling that used to happen in the original Olympics, I figured you to be more of a Summer Olympics guy. |

The fact is that he had more opportunities to win gold medals since he was in more events. The point is Phelps is not inherently greater because of the number of medals he won considering the fact that he was able to compete in 8 or 9 events. Granted it is a historic achievement for his sport, but most people don't get 8 or 9 events to win a gold. |

You do realize that most people don't get 8 or 9 events because THEY AREN'T ATHLETIC OR GOOD ENOUGH TO COMPETE IN THAT MANY. |

It's true though. Take Jordan for example. You remove the second three peat because Shaq wasn't mature enough to dominate, and because LeBron was in middle school, then what has he done that's so historic? Three rings total isn't worth the fame he garners. Plus if he wasn't over six feet there's probably no way he plays in the NBA to begin with. Overrated. |
