At work, I no longer answer my phone. About 75% they don't leave a message. When they DO leave a message, I can usually respond quickly via email or better yet, refer them to somebody else. I gotta say, I have become so much more productive at work since my new policy of not answering my phone.

I carry this tip over to real life...unless I'm expecting a call from someone or it's someone I haven't talked to in a while that I want to talk to, ignore...

Yeah, I'm not a sales guy, so all the people that call me work for the same company.

Fair enough. I'm an accountant. I talk to people when they call me. Maybe I'm old-fashioned.

If I had to stop and answer my phone every 5 minutes I would barely have time to put together a mirepoix.

Another good work tip is to oversleep and not call in. Also, make sure you steal. Nobody is going to notice a few bucks skimmed off the top here and there.

I think it's just in reference to the advice in the OP being terrible advice, generally speaking.

Avoid giving your secretary the tip. It makes it hard to fire her.

I still think it's great advice...don't listen to the haters, Hatchetman!
