So I won an online auction and after paying the guy sends me a message telling me I need to pay taxes for the item in order to complete the sale. I told him it wasn't going to happen because his business is in another state. If I am not mistaken I am only required to pay taxes if they have a physical location in Illinois or are registered with the state of Illinois.

You do owe tax.

Sales tax / Use tax. Whatever you prefer to call it to make you feel better as you pay it.

edit: I work for an auctioneer.

This is what I found. Explain to me why it is wrong? If I pay taxes in that state I would also be required to pay taxes in Illinois. That means I'll be taxed twice for the same purchase.

I don't think you have to pay taxes to him, but technically you are supposed to pay it during your tax return.

The other state's tax is tax deductible.

Just tell him to write it off.

You don't even know what a write-off is, do you?

Renounce your citizenship and declare your property a sovereign state. That one always seems to work

Tax here would be paid in the state where the item was purchased. It's a straight sales tax. Illinois is not owed a penny.
