BOCA RATON, Fla. - A Palm Beach County man is flying a Ku Klux Klan flag outside his trailer home in Boca Raton, and is prominently displaying a noose and "Members Wanted" sign in his front yard, CBS Miami reports. The man, who did not give his name, defended his right to fly the flag at his home in western Boca Raton. "I'm not sending any message," the man told a reporter. "The same thing when the Puerto Rican flies his flag. He's proud of his heritage. I'm proud of mine." Neighbors, however, say the flag sends a message of hatred, violence and racism. "I think it's horrible," said Roseanne Areces. "I think it's disgusting and I think it should be taken down." Margaret Martin lives across the street. She said she is one of the only African-Americans in the neighborhood and that she fears for her safety. "I'm worried," she said, and wondered whether he would burn a cross in her yard. |

I don't think he has the right to incite anger and fear amongst his neighbors. If I was the law,I'd tell him to take it down. Of course the ACLU would get involved,which sucks. |

I think you have to allow the flag but you might be able to do something about displaying a noose. Maybe you can claim that is a direct threat to your neighbors or something... |

Hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of people have been killed in this country's history by people waving the American flag, and it offends me. Regardless of that, one thing has nothing to do with the other. You can't restrict someone's freedom of speech because it goes against your beliefs. The guy is a pud. Lot's of people in the world are, this guy is letting us know ahead of time. |

The man who had raised the flag will replace it with a Confederate flag, his wife, Marla Curly, said. Curly said that her husband, who refused to give his name, put up the flag "because he's a boob." She also said that flying the flag was "ignorant and offensive" and that he would substitute a confederate flag because "he's a rebel without a cause." "I'm apologizing for him," she said. She said that she did not believe in what the Klan stood for, but that her husband did. She had earlier urged him to tell people why he "loves to be a white man." And to her mother, who stopped by begging them to end the neighborhood controversy, she said, "Apologize to who? The blacks and the Puerto Ricans? Just because he took the flag down doesn't mean he feels any different. He still feels the way he feels." One neighbor, Susan Wantz, shouted, "What's wrong with you people? I've been here for 32 years. You don't belong here. Tan America! You're a pig. There's not room in America for racism and people like you. If you don't like it in this neighborhood, get out." But another neighbor, Bianca Barresi, said, "I'm not racist, they are, but they're really good people," said neighbor Bianca Barresi. In addition to the Klan flag, a sign saying "Members Wanted" is in the yard and a noose hangs in the front yard. The man would not say what he was recruiting members for; the noose was in the front yard because he didn't "have a big tree in the backyard to hang it from." On Wednesday, the Anti-Defamation League and the ACLU both defended the man's First Amendment right to display the flag. "However, the Anti-Defamation League strongly condemns the display of the Ku Klux Klan flag coupled with the noose, which is akin to the swastika with respect to the Jewish community in the fearful emotions it evokes within the African-American community," said Hava Holzhauer, the ADL's Florida regional director. "While the display is likely legal, these symbols are highly offensive, hurtful and a haunting reminder of the Ku Klux Klan's history of violence, terrorism, and lynchings of African Americans." The ACLU noted that the First Amendment protected people's right to express themselves on their own property even in ways that were offensive and abhorrent. As a society we have to be careful not to force views on others. Everyone has the right to their own beliefs even if they are unpopular or what others consider to be bigoted. What we are seeing with a lot of the things going on in politics is that certain views are being promoted as acceptable and other views as unacceptable. Is this guy going to be charged with a hate crime for saying he's a KKK member? Holding an unpopular viewpoint is not a crime and when it is made a crime the concept of freedom is diminished. |

His neighbors' reactions/actions are their own and not his responsibility, same as for anyone else. People that don't like the ACLU tend to have little understanding of the imoprtance of their work. I was that way too for a while; I then realized the grave danger* in that way of thinking. * - is there any other kind? |

There's no question he should be allowed to fly the flag. I don't even know how there's a debate. It's protected in his Constitutional rights. As someone already said, we also have the right as a society to mock him and beat up his kids (well maybe not the last one). |
