Does anyone know what is the most suitable attire for a job interview? Are dress pants and a dress shirt preferable? Would it be wise to come in clean shaven or is a little facial hair fine as long as it looks neat?

Dress for the job you want.

Would depend on the job, but I've always gone with a shirt, slacks, tie, and clean shave.

If you have to fly to the interview, you better damn well wear a sportcoat.

Depends on the job. I would dress differently for my HVAC job interview than I would for an investment banker job.

I'm asking because I may have a real good opportunity coming up and I know that many of you have a lot more experience in the job market than I do.

It's been 20 years but I wore a suit to my last interview.

Wear a suit. Every time.
Show them that you care.

A tie and sport coat minimum always commands respect regardless of the position.

And what if the position is Missionary?

Sure, until he opens his mouth and ruins the whole thing.

Then she gets hit in the face with a tie.

Truth. I always prefer to interview with a freshly shorn scrotum.

Less chance it's a sweaty mess down there when the interview team does the customary nut-clutch.

I would say wear a suit every time and look neat. It's possible to overdress for an interview but as long as you can talk their language that won't be a problem.

I wouldn't get out of bed for a $5,000 suit.

I wouldn't get out of bed for a $5,000 suit.

Why not? I paid for almost 20% of it.

This, and I'd also check out askamanager.org

The site is run by a former executive at a lobbying firm (I think), and tends to provide contemporary advice on a variety of work-related questions, including everything related to interviewing. You can use the site's search function to find answers related to your specific situation. She tends to be a bit self-righteous sometimes but the content, as well as the comments from visitors, are mostly useful. I also don't have much experience at the moment after school, so I leaned on it a lot during a job search. I also asked a few questions here on the board and received some good advice.

Aside from clothing here is another tip. When the interview is ending ASK FOR THE JOB. Make it very clear you are the man during the interview and so on. But on the ending at some point before leaving say I CAN DO OR I WOULD LIKE TO DO THIS JOB FOR YOU. Not to just a HR hack but if you interview with the actual boss. It works.

You also said this to me awhile ago; I found it useful when I used a variation of what you're saying here. It's a good way to end things and try to set yourself apart...depending on the situation, etc.
