We are winding up our mini vacation here in Nashville tomorrow. We are staying in a house instead of a hotel. Since we first arrived , we noticed a dog hanging around the backs of all the houses near us. None are fenced in so he pretty much has been roaming around all of them, sleeps in the grass most of the day. I talked with our neighbor, she says he's been there a few years (wtf) . She feeds him and he definitely isn't malnourished. What he is is very very skittish, won't allow anyone to pet him. I've set some food out and called him over, he approaches and slinks very low, tail down ready to bolt away if any move is made towards him. He'll come close enough to eat the food and back, off to a safe distance again. I'm not sure if he's like this because of abuse or just being a stray for so long. He obviously sleeps outside as well. Now this is Nashville and not Chicago so I understand how he can he can survive this long as he has food and water and it doesn't get crazy cold here. It's all I can do to return home and then come right back down here and take him back with me . I feel so bad seeing him out there all day and night. He seems like a pretty gentle but scared dog. I'm afraid I'd be doing him a disservice by taking him away from what he knows though. For all I know he can't even be domesticated after living outside for so long. Should I just forget this crazy thought and when we leave, just forget about him? He's been doing just fine or as fine as a stray dog can do without me butting into his business . I just feel like I should do something for him. I'm a sad panda at the thought of leaving and doing nothing.

I'm not sure what you can do -- capturing him and taking him back against his will is going to put a lot of stress on the dog as well as yourself. I guess you could give the lady who was helping the dog some money (or some dog food if you don't trust her with the money) to help feed the dog. And then come back every year and feed the dog until one year you come back and the dog is gone and you have a sad. :(

Why has no one called animal control? They can take him in an place him with a shelter for adoption.

Forget that dog!! You will take him home and he will destroy your living room the first time you shut the bathroom door to take a shit. That's if he makes the bus ride or car ride back from TN to Chicago. Feeling sappy for a mangy mutt? There are a hundred animal shelters filled with dogs that would be more than glad to go home with you. Take one of those.

Agreed. Buy a 50 lb. bag of dog food. And leave it there with the dog and the neighbor.

Yeah it's a pretty untenable situation. It's one of those where
you feel like you do something but not sure what the something is or if what you do just makes it worse.

Do some work with fostering stray dogs, not so much intentionally, we will just say a family member is heavily involved with dog training, care, etc etc...she has 9 dogs and considering I deal with the property, I get to spend more time then I like. Yet I do like dogs.

I know you can't force that situation and it will take you days, weeks to even get the dog to come to you, while holding some dog treats. Seeing you are there for a week, you can't do anything about it.

However, seeing the neighbor feeds to dog, get it a shelter close to the ladies back door, where maybe she can see the dog or put food or water in the shelter.

I would say have someone build a shelter if you are going to be there to see that project through, but it doesnt sound like it.

Buy the plastic shelter (Dog house) and say good luck.

And we wonder why Putin's marching into whatever neighboring country he feels like marching into, we got our asses handed to us in Iraq and Afghanistan and plucky Somali pirates make our Seal teams cut and run.

I have no idea what you are talking about. It's a thread about a stray dog.

Ha, yea, I've no idea about his wife but I think it was pasta who kept posting pictures of his family dogs looking miserable while dressed up in costumes.
