Is there any circumstance where it would be acceptable to wear a short sleeve shirt with a tie if you were instructed to "wear a button down shirt with a tie"...I kind of assumed it meant dress shirt but I just discovered the shirt that they nice lady at the big and tall store picked out was a short sleeve shirt so now I'm thinking she either trolled me or the "Falling Down" look made a comeback that I wasn't aware of.

For context, this is for a bachelor party...it's understood that we will be visiting some nicer gentlemens clubs, bars, piano bar, and a Brazilian steakhouse.

Never ever wear a short sleeve shirt & a tie. Also, don't let store employees choose your clothes for you.

Jorr, so I am wearing a fine shirt untucked with fine proper shoes and jeans. Do I button the cuffs or upturn them? Casual affair.

Ahhhhh! I was going to post if you are going for a Sipowicz look then you are good. One of our college friends sported this look a lot. Thanks for the memories!

Old firm I worked for used to call the short-sleeve/tie look a "Code 3".

Yeah but either you know how to dress or your wife dresses you well. You have a double vent suit. You are fancy.

NO!

It's a terrible look. Only thing worse are those shirts where the collar is a different color than the rest of the shirt. #EntranceOfTheGladiators

None of those require a tie. Maybe the Steakhouse, but i doubt it.
