Is this normal? Or is this an example of people being egocentric?


This happens mostly with women, but sometimes with men. But basically, someone posts something on Facebook... maybe a funny story about their kid (or pet). Then everyone else responds with their own example of that. It goes like this:

Facebooker A: "[KID'S NAME] recently started saying "uh oh" and understands the appropriate times to say it. However he is enjoying it so much that he just wants to throw and drop whatever he can for the chance to point at it and say "uh oh".

Facebooker B in reply: [FB B KID'S NAME] just likes to say it, but usually it's not in the right context.

Facebooker C in reply: [FB C KID'S NAME] hasn't started talking yet. Can't wait!

Facebooker D in reply: [FB D KID'S NAME] is obsessed with the word "NO!" He says it allll the time. It's so cute!!!

Facebooker E in reply: [FB E KID'S NAME] is so funny! He walks around all day yelling "Mommy!!" He is the best. I'm so lucky.



Are they doing FB right? Or am I right in noticing that commenters are weird for internalizing the story to make it about them?

Here's the deal I think. If someone is annoying, following them on social media will expose that like crazy.

It's mildly egocentric but a lot of times people are looking for suggestions or similar stories with their posts. It depends.

Plus there are frienemies who WANT to fuck with the original poster (My son was saying Uh Oh at a much earlier age)

I think Facebook is a result of the "cult of self" rather than the cause of it. People used to take pictures of interesting things. Now they point the cameras at themselves and call it a "selfie". Everyone is entitled to his own truth, to his own offenses, to his own everything. iPhones, iPads, iTunes, I, I, I, I, I, I!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was at a party the other day and a friend of my wife is the the most boring guy in the world in spite of having lived all over the place and clearly having some potentially interesting stories. After we left, my wife said she couldn't put her finger on what it was that makes the guy so obnoxious. So I explained it to her. When he tells a story, it isn't about the awe-inspiring beauty of the Lau Archipelago, it's about him looking at the Lau Archipelago. But I think that's pretty common these days.

That's an insanely accurate representation of so many people these days. I think this is the exact same thing.

This definitely happens, but I'm talking about the ones where they clearly aren't looking for any help or anything. Just a straight up story.

So you can live it up at some party on the weekend but you can't afford to pay me back???

The whole thing is a bit egocentric in a way. I went through and deleted about 30 "friends" this
weekend and am down to about 130 now. I noticed how many some people have and couldn't
imagine trying to scroll through Facebook on a daily or bi-daily basis.

I've noticed that the amount of posts about oneself on facebook are directly proportional to how boring the person seems to have become. I would love to have heard and seen some of the stories of those people in their 20s. Now, the highlight of their year seems to be a visit to the Wisconsin Dells.

And the conversation has been redirected

And the thing is, those stories wouldnt have gone on facebook. At least not the way it is now.

I wouldnt be checking in to the Checkerboard Lounge and telling stories about drinking underage while hanging with on duty cops.


The best stories are too good for Facebook.

This may be my only chance to pull the "in the old days" so I'll do it. But when Facebook was just for college students, it was pretty awesome. Once they added the ability to upload pictures, it was pretty entertaining. I could see what my buddies at other colleges were doing. And they posted them knowing only friends would see it (well... you know) and not family/co-workers etc. It used to be awesome.

Facebook = the network tv of the internet. It's all senior citizens pissed they canceled Matlock/Murder She Wrote and 30+ year old catherder chicks. If an under 30 year old girl is active on facebook (and not just on there to have a profile), she's likely a single mother.

It is something that happens with women and men. Lying from people I have a personal relationship is what annoys me the most. People can create a fantasy world on Facebook.

I don't think it's necessarily much different than what happens here or on any message board. Someone will start a thread about a topic and people will either comment on the OP's post or relate it to their own experiences.

You don't have to on FB. Just like the comment or make a comment about what happened. If you are so moved to share your own experience then post it on your own timeline.
