So what's all the fuss about? Over the weekend, I heard & read about all the celebrity hacks / leaks of nude pics. Spent some time at "work" this morning finding what I could. First off, I haven't really heard of half of the "celebs", so that doesn't do much for me. I guess I found some of the Jennifer Lawrence & Kate Upton interesting enough. I'm more interested in the FBI investigation and possible negative impact on Apple & iCloud. FYI - I think most sites have taken the pictures down. If you google "the fappening" and go to Reddit.....you see some people have posted links to places where a lot of the pics have been saved to a backup site....have to download a zip file(s). There is no privacy! |

basically someone with admin access to apple icloud services managed to go and find a bunch of private "hey now" pictures that were likely automatically backed up from celebs/significant-others' iphones to the cloud (tho it's way more en vogue to say OMFG EVIL HACKERS GOT 'EM!!!!!) and they nabbed a metric shit-ton of these naughty pics of famous people and started dumping them on 4chan with the hopes of selling them off for bitcoins or something. and for some reason jennifer lawrence is the center of this because her pics seemed the most like a photoshoot, and her lawyer/s are going off trying to backtrace everyone and nail them. there's some outrage (from guess which crowd) over the concept of "violating" a woman's (privacy) to view these pictures, with one blogger/online-mag-writer going as far to say that viewing these leaked pics is "psychic rape" indeed, in the year of our lord 2014 we are now in the age of "psychic rape" --- but hey hannity ran a segment on psychic vampires a few years ago so i guess nothing should surprise me. so yeah, given that social justice is so entrenched in the digital world where they can literally shout anyone down and threaten 12 year olds if they want (find those pics of @redzos10 or whatever where some SJWs were going after a 12 year old kid, posting pictures of him from his facebook on twitter and saying "someone needs to make this kid fear for his personal safety") there's now a big ol referendum on the concept of leaked pictures and, by proxy, "psychic rape" |

Maybe this should be in the omnibus Gawker Sucks thread, but a SJW from Gizmodo just took a Who You Crappin' for the ages by condemning everyone who looked at Jennifer Lawrence pictures after once writing a column about how Anthony Weiner should have been smarter about his dick pictures because of course they would get leaked: Quote: Apple has not commented on how exactly hackers got their pathetic, pervy hands on the private photos of talented famous people like Jennifer Lawrence and Hope Solo, but the snot-gobbling basement dwellers who reposted the pictures like grossly violating the privacy of a celebrity could somehow erase the deep-rooted pettiness of their lives may have used a software program called iBrute to force their way into the celebrities' iCloud accounts. There is no definitive evidence that the hackers used iCloud, but Apple's confirmation that it is looking into the incident is a sign that an iCloud violation may have played a role. No matter how they did it, the flaccid-dicked trashcans who spread the hacked photos around are now under Apple scrutiny. Quote: Dick pic me once, shame on you. Dick pic me twice, well … you shouldn’t accidentally do this twice because there are oh-so-many ways to keep this stuff under wraps. It remains to be seen whether New York voters will get over the fact that Weiner acted contrite and cowed about his creeper behavior when he left office but then kept at it for a full year, or that he used the world’s dorkiest pseudonym, Carlos Danger. Or that he was chatting with a 22-year-old, more than 20 years his junior, after he’d already put his wife, Huma Abedin, through a profoundly humiliating experience. Even though dirtbaggery should never be condoned, let’s say that Weiner and Abedin do actually have an agreement that he can let his freak flag fly on social media – if that’s the case, it’s high time he learn there are a bevy of ways for him to stop broadcasting all this. Which is why I’m presenting you with a list of apps Weiner could’ve used to make the sending-gross-messages-over-the-Internet-to-young-women-who-he-wasn’t-married-to process a little easier. hey buddy |

What's with these kids and all the naked pictures? I've been able to successfully navigate many decades both without taking any naked pictures of anyone and having naked pictures taken of me. And I'm only moderately famous. If my job was to have a public image, I think I'd be able to avoid taking a bunch pictures of my wang and leave them laying around the internet. |

What I'm seeing in the public reaction isn't so much evil menz versus principled womyn so much as a generational divide between those who grew up on an internet where anonymity is expected and an internet where anonymity is shunned (a/k/a the Mark Zuckerberg protocol). Younger people just don't keep their dukes up. If you came of age in the Wild West days where this strange mysterious World Wide Web was not to be trusted, you've probably learned to keep a low profile as best you can -- not that it's very easy anymore. If the internet is just a part of life, then this shit is scary, because you probably don't know jack about your shitty iPhone settings and this could theoretically happen to you. |

Yeah but it's not going to happen to you if you aren't sitting around drinking and taking pictures of your junk. I've been drunk many times. I'm drunk right now. But, in all those times, I never thought about grabbing the Polaroid and waking up Little Dr. Ken. You always wonder if there will be an exact moment where you realize you've become an old person. I'm here to say there is. |

I suppose the line of demarcation was when you no longer had to go to Fotomat or Walgreens and face the photo developing clerk. |

"JLaw" in the 4chan screen grab above = Jennifer Lawrence? So she's going don quixote on these pictures? Her lawyer should be brought up on malpractice charges. Tho having seen the photos, including a couple of JLaw's glazed physiognomy after someone went Peter North all over her face, I can understand her overboard but futile response. There's no putting the genie back in the bottle on these things. The internet never forgets. Best thing she can do is ask the major search engines to exclude these items from their search results and maybe send a few take-down/cease and desist letters to the more popular torrent / sharing sites. Going after individual downloaders is nutso. What's the charge and how do you make it stick? People downloaded items from the internet that are freely available. Who knows anything about the copyright of these pics. Technically the copyright holder is likely the boyfriend who took the pics. I doubt these pics were obtained via anonymous hackers successfully guessing all of the individual usernames and then brute-forcing the passwords.. Yes, iCould had a security flaw in the "find my iphone" app that didn't lock the account after X number of unsuccessful login attempts. However, the hackers would have to first know the individual username to brute force against--and I would guess many of these photos were uploaded by the likely unknown-to-most boyfriends. And I doubt these starlets used easy to guess account names like JLaw1990. That there are so many accounts compromised and, reportedly, many more to come suggests it was an Edward Snowden/Bradley Manning type insider with root/admin access who pilfered these photos for whatever reason. Perhaps he or she was about to be canned, maybe they thought they could sell them or whatever. Here's the current list of leaked photos and videos. A lot of them appear to be taken in hotel rooms: |

It's not really about taking the pictures. It's about how you store them. I don't hear Lena Dunham whining about the invasive technology that allows websites to target advertise her shitty show by pulling keywords out of e-mails. Apparently, a lot of people just found out that anything you store in "The Cloud" or on any machine that is connected to the Internet is not secure. |

I don't see why the "starlets" would care. They have sex, so what? We are still a country that pretends it is libertine but is ultimately prudish. Everyone gets naked. Everyone, excluding a few members of this board, has sex. If you aren't embarrassed, the distributor loses all control over you. |

Yeah, I think it's fair for the user to assume there is a basic level of security. But at this point, shouldn't everyone know that storing anything where it can be accessed via the web isn't a whole lot different than taping it under a mailbox? |

It goes even more if you know you are going to be a target for things like this. I mean, these people buy million dollar houses in gated communities but they aren't going to turn on a feature that sends you a text message when someone is accessing your account?

Its why Heather Graham's career tanked after Boogie Nights. She should have been a huge star Also, I havent seen this anywhere but Seth MacFarlane's song at the Oscars about who's boobs we've seen included a line about never having seen Jennifer Lawrence's tits and her fist pumping about it. Weird coincidence. |
