Post subject:  Cards on the table time: Have you slapped your kids?

I can confess to some slaps on the bottom during toddler years, that's about it.
Seriously,my two kids were pretty well behaved. I have seen some hyper kids in my life that need some form of punishment. Is it better to put a label on said kids and drug them into a stupor to calm them down?

Similar to Jimmy some slaps on the ass or hand when toddlers. In fact, I can't even remember a single instance clearly. My thought on the toddler range was you are not reasoning with that age child when they need to learn don't touch the hot pot on the stove or something.

I have never slapped or hit a little kid. What do I win?

i have swatted all of mine on the rear end at times.

Never used any switches or spoons or anything like that, and never left any marks or bruises, etc.

I do not think swatting on the rear equals child abuse like it seems many today believe. But there is definitely a line that should not be crossed.

That is the part I do not get with some especially Bernsie. Even if you vehemently disagree with light spanking and its results why lump everyone together as sensationalist abusers?

Bernstein would have you on the same level as the Manson family for your views. I just heard his latest "crusade" driving home. What a tool.

yeah I started listening earlier and turned it off. Was not interested in hearing him go on about that today.

Bernsie is wrong on this one, IMO.

Raising them in Missouri is way across that line.

Never touched our kids but I verbally blew up on my 7 year old son a few months back.

He was so scared he started to cry and had a hard time catching his breath. He told me "your yelling felt like you punched me in the stomach"

I have never felt as bad as a person. I will never lay a hand on our kids. I can't imagine how it would freak them out.

I can understand that. My big mouth can be a lot scarier than a slap on the butt.

I slapped my son's bottom once when he was like two and refused to stop dancing in the tub. I was worried he was going to slip and crack his head open. Wife never lets me forget that one.

I blow my top every few months though less frequently than I used to.

I will say this once and for all...

Leashing children is clinically proven to be effective. Just ask Sean Hannity.

Do you use a regular collar, choker, pincher, or just a gentle leader? Or are you more of a harness man?

Depends if they recognize me as the alpha male. If not, a choker will typically send a loving message.

Though I was spanked as a child I think trying to kiddy reason is better than resorting to force. For discipline I'd imagine expressing how disobedience and/or reckless behavior can lead to unwelcome consequences would be a more effective way to reform behavior, as well as provide better learning experiences.

For AP style spanking I just don't know how you can go that far. Toddlers are simply chunkier and taller babies until like three, and even afterward they're still so small and helpless.

Yes I have. I told myself when I had kids I would never curse at them. My grandmother invented curse words and that actually bothered me more as a kid than any belt or hand could. My son made break my promise to myself earlier this year. Boys can be very special.

We spanked, but did not need to for long; about one diaper-less swat on the bottom got that message across. I do remember a 3-shot barrage that I landed on the rear of our oldest when he was about 4 years old- I felt that was too much after the fact.

I have never slapped anyone, but my wife did slap our daughter about a year ago, for using a certain word to her in anger. I didn't see it, but was surprised by the event, and impressed by the results!

My nephew would take 5 smacks anyday of the week, over taking away his Ipad, XBox and TV.

The only thing is that what I have seen is the Ipads and such are given to the kids as an extended pacifier, so when the Ipad is taken away they bug the parents so much, that the threat of no Ipad for a week, becomes 3 hours!

Anybody ever have their mouth washed out with soap? I feel like I used to get that all the time, I have no idea how many times it actually happened. Whenever I watched A Christmas story I think of it. It had no effect on me.

There are times when I feel like my kids don't know what to do with themselves if they are not occupied by something organized or staring at some sort of screen. They miss out on so much.

My sister uses the "I will take the IPad away for ______"....and then she takes it away, then they bug the crap out of her and she gives it back.

Very effective!

I don't have kids yet (so I'm not qualified to discuss), but from my observations, follow through is one of the biggest assets parents lack. No consequences equals no results.

Can't do that. I can be a little fire and brimstoneish at times. My husband is super patient and has a very calm way about him. Actions have consequences, doesn't get him mad, both work. it's hard, they don't have directions, what works for one doesn't work for the other. They can make you so mad too, especially if other things are going on. It's crazy, you never really know if you are doing theright thing.
