Starting next month, Chicago police officers will be swabbing the bags of some riders entering some CTA rail stations to make sure the bags don't have explosives, Chicago Police announced Friday.

There is "no known terrorist threat" that prompted the new procedure, which should be starting the week of Nov. 3, said Nancy Lipman, Chicago Police commander for public transportation. "We are adding this as another protective measure," Lipman said.
A team of officers will be stationed outside the turnstiles of a randomly selected rail stop to ask randomly selected riders to swab the outside of their bag. The bags are not opened.

The whole process should take "less than a minute," Lipman said during a Friday morning press conference at the Clinton stop on the Green and Pink lines. "We expect it to have no impact on a customer's commute time."

Amtrak and the New York City Police Department employ a similar screening service, Lipman said. The process is being paid for with a federal grant but officials could not give a dollar amount.

Riders who don't want to participate in the screening can't enter that station's turnstiles but can go to another rail station. CTA spokesman Brian Steele said the screenings will be performed during rush hour so riders won't have to worry about missing their train if they undergo screenings because of continual train service.

More than 229 million CTA rail rides were taken in 2013. The CTA has more than 140 rail stations.

Chicago police say they will randomly select one rail station each day to set up the screening table outside the rail turnstiles. A team of four to six officers will man the table, which will have two explosives testing machines.

Police will approach riders, whom they have randomly selected by picking a random number that morning, Lipman said.
For example, if police pick the number 10, they will ask the 10th person who enters the station, then the 20th and so on, Lipman said.

Cloth is rubbed on the bag and then inserted into the testing machine. Riders who pass the test are free to enter the turnstiles.

I think that narrows it....and we have this thing that allows the US to hear who might have one of those conversations that needs to be replayed and narrows down these lists. You can start with every male under 30 who has gone back and forth to any area that is known to have terror groups. It's like buying a house. I want a house for $300K....search results 3,000.....with 3 BR and 3 BA......narrowed to 2000....with a Pool! Search results 30......those 30 you look at carefully....and I understand it is millions of people to look at ....which is why we built this place.

Your original premise was to visually profile everyone getting on the train. My only point was that profiling doesn't necessarily work because not every terrorist wears a towel on his head while muttering verses from the Koran. But somehow it morphed into conducting interviews and running background checks prior to boarding the train. If what you are advocating is a "license to ride," then that is a different discussion.

But FWIW I am with you on the failure of the US to adequately act on the available intel.

From time to time it shocks me just how much America has changed over the last 15 years.

"Random Screenings" is really a euphemism for "We're authorizing this goon to put his hands on whoever he wants." One time I was in an airport waiting to board a flight from Philly to Chicago and they announced a random screening. So, these TSA weirdos show up and start frisking people, all the while there is this strange small talk going on between the agent and passenger:

Lucky me, I get screened. And, after satisfying himself that I didn't have a dirty bomb in my underwear, he moves on. Naturally this Michael Chiklis look-a-like comes over and asks me to raise my arms.

I eventually boarded the plane without a care in the world.

Because I posted something Don cherry said, or didnt, doesnt mean I agree with him...lol....as some I guess believe. I also dont see Don cherry as an accurate voice of anything except Hockey and I cant even be sure about that.
