I got my first experience today with jury duty, and what an experience it was. Reported to the courthouse at 8:30am. 71 of us in the jury pool and we were stuffed in this room that had about enough seats for 50 people while we waited to go and hear about the case and have a jury selected. I got there early enough to get a seat. So we are all hanging out and this lady probably 25 yrs old or so comes in who is about 350lbs. She stands right next to where I am sitting and is huffing and puffing from having walked up one whole flight of stairs. She makes some comment about not being very good at standing and she is clearly hinting for me and/or the guy behind me to give up our seat to her. Fuck that, I am not giving up my seat to someone 10 years younger than me just because she loves cheeseburgers too much and her knees are hurting. The guy behind me apparently felt the same way because we both kept our seats until we moved locations.

Then we got this real annoying lady in the middle of everything that owns a daycare and has no one to watch her daycare today and there is supposedly some state visitor coming today to do an inspection. She is freaking out and telling everyone that she cannot stay. No one listens to her and the county clerk just tells her that it will be dealt with during jury selection. More on her in a minute.

So we finally at like 9:20am we are told it is time to line up and head into the court room to be questioned and have a jury chosen. We make our way into a courtroom and amazingly everyone gets a seat, of course we are so close together that we can tell what everyone had for breakfast. Once we get seated the attorneys and defendant are all introduced and we are told the specifics of the case. Then from about 9:30am to 12:30am we are bombarded with every question know to man. Do you know anyone involved with the case? Have you ever experienced anything that would prohibit you from being unbiased? Blah Blah Blah. They even asked us if any one of us owned a shihtzu dog? The victim in the case owned/loved a shihtzu dog and the attorney thought that anyone that was sympathetic in that love might not able to be unbiased in rendering a decision. WTF is that?

Now back to annoying daycare lady. As the attorneys are asking all of these questions her cell phone (which we were not supposed to have in the court room) goes off. And this nutcase ANSWERS the phone and starts talking on her phone in the middle of everything. I thought the judge was going to loose it. She then says that she has a dire emergency at her daycare and needs to be excused. He stared at her for a few secs and then I think he decided we would all be better off with her gone, so he instructs the attorneys that unless they had any objections she was going to be removed from the list and she was free to leave. Now she was stuck way in the back and in the middle of a row so she has to climb over all these people and finally makes her way out. It was quite the scene.

At 12:30 with the attorneys still going strong on questions finally someone raises their hand and asks if we could please have a bathroom break. The judge asks the attorneys how much longer they have and they said maybe 20-30 mins. So he says we can have 5-10 mins to go to the bathroom. At least 20 mins later everyone finally gets back to their seats and the attorneys start back up and I shit you not they ask 2 more questions and sit down saying they are finished. Again, I thought the judge was going to stare a hole in the one guy. If he had only a couple more questions then why say 20-30 mins? We could have finished that up and gotten a bathroom break when they released us for lunch. So the judge releases us for lunch and tells us to be back in an hour. So we all go our separate ways and come back in an hour. When we get back we have to sit in the same room we started with not enough seats. 45 mins later finally we are all brought back into the courtroom and the 12 jurors are named and the rest of us are allowed to go home. I was never so thankful to get out of a place in my life. Sadly tho we were told we had to come back on March 19th for another trial.

Our justice system at work.

Sounds more like the issue was with the hoi polloi rather than the lawyers. :D

Question for the lawyers out there -- if I got pulled for jury duty, would mentioning the fact that I know about jury nullification help me to get dismissed quickly?

I was summoned about 6 Months ago for federal grand jury at the Dierksen building in the city & ignored it just to see what would happen. I received a 2nd notice so I went to the website & filled out the survey. A few weeks later I receive a notice to appear. So now there is a chance that I have to ride the fucking train everyday to the city. I'm not happy about this. I report Monday morning with about 200 other people & sit around from 8 to 1 & we are told we can leave but we need to call the 800 # after 5:00 every night to see if we are needed. A few days go by & I'm not needed...until Thursday night & the message says that I must report Friday morning. I almost no showed but decided to go at the last minute. About 100 people are there & we are told that we are going upstairs to the courtroom & the judge will instruct us what to do. We are all given questionnaires to fill out asking us pretty much everything about us...where do you live, are you married, how many kids, what do they do, favorite TV shows, hobbys, etc... This survey is only to prepare us in case we are chosen to sit in the jury box & get interviewed by the judge. We all walk into the courtroom & the accused is standing there in an orange jumpsuit with cuffs on & a few Lawyers. This courtroom is huge. Much larger than I anticipated. The judge proceeds to tell us about the case & the defendant & that he is accused of selling drugs to federal agents & illegal weapons possession. She also explains that she may ask us questions about our ability to be an impartial judge as well as questions about our family members. My name is called in the 2nd group & I proceed to the jury box with 10 or 12 other people. I'm the 2nd person in the first row & the Bailiff walks over to us & hands a wireless microphone to the guy sitting to my left. The judge asks him to introduce himself & tell everyone about him, his life & family. He talks for a couple of minutes & the judge asks him a few questions & he finishes & hands the mic to me. Now I had planned to go hard line knowing that it would get me out of this deal so I was prepared for this & had planned my approach beforehand. I stand up & introduce myself, run through all of my family members, their ages, what they do for a living, & proceed to tell everyone that my favorite TV show is Breaking Bad & I enjoy watching Fox news & listening to Rush. While I have watched Fox news & have listened to Rush, I very seldom do...but when I do I enjoy them. :P. The judge asks me if I have had any life experiences with drugs that would make it difficult to be an impartial judge. I tell the judge & the other 100 people in the room that I lost someone who was very close to me to addiction, & that a couple who we have been friends with for 30 years has a family member who is in prison for 25 years for driving a semi truck that contained a few hundred pounds of weed. I then tell the judge that I have very strong feelings about guns & drugs, & she asks me to elaborate. I tell her that I have no tolerance for guns, drugs or repeat criminals.
Needless to say I wasn't chosen.

my jury duty consisted of a coroner's inquest about 8 years ago. it was only a day, and it was pretty easy...well...it was basically like staring at rotten.com for a day but at least it didn't require a lot of effort. and the judge was a cool guy.

found out a whole lot of people die in wheaton annually.

Just say you hate the race/creed/religion of whoever the defendant is.

Scorehead could have just printed out his posts from this board, and that would have been enough to get him bounced.

never trust a lawyer who begins "let me be brief"

If he had said he only had 2-3 more questions, the judge would have naturally interpreted it to mean 2-3 prepared questions and a host of other questions resulting from those 2-3.

Thanks for your service

I was selected as juror for a murder trial (Kane County). It was pretty much a slam dunk that he did it....we just had to determine 1st degree or 2nd degree. It was a very interesting 3 days....and when we the jury started to deliberate,...i remember we had pretty much rendered our decision but it was close to dinner time...so we waited until the pizza arrived and we ate, then submitted our verdict. Guilt - 1st degree !!

Side Note - first witness called to the stand was a smoking hot lady. She didn't offer much to the case, but I found myself trying to determine where she lived and where she hung out so maybe I could "accidentally" meet her some day! :-)

last time that notice came for me i called up and did the delay option, which was supposed to push it back 6 months (it was february and cold and miserable and going to 26th and cali where i believe i can't even take a phone with for the ride? yeah whatever)..... and evidently they've learned their lesson. or they're being extraordinarily cool, which if it's the case thank you.

i only got close to getting picked for a jury once once.... i was 1-2 people away from being interviewed by the prosecution/defense. but i usually make it a point to not shave and remember these rap lyrics in my mind "it's like i got the whole world against me / me thinking intensely / a head full of headaches and a hand full of sensi(millia)" and yeah, they'll go for the upstanding yuppies every time before they go this direction. and then i'm reminded of that carlin routine where he says that he tells 'em he's perfect for a jury because he can look at somebody and determine guilt * fingersnap * lickety split.

One of the Cook County Circuit Court locations is across the street from Arlington Park, which is nice if you get called in the summer

And... Give it to him SH.

Dupage County is the best place I've heard of to be called. 1 day, or 1 trial. I've been let go at lunch the last 2 times.

 it is funny to see scorehead get a taste of his own medicine. Numerous times he has been asked to provide examples for some statement he has made and everytime he just ignores it and goes about his clueless way. Nice to see douchebag giving that treatment back to him

How long before mama is on tv saying that the cop shouldn't have shot her son or that he didn't have to do that ? 16 years old? 10pm? Honors math mourns his loss

Yea. He was such a good boy. He wouldn't ever hurt anyone.

I thank this off duty cop for a job well done.

I always thank my police officers for having to kill other human beings. This statement alone would get you bounced easily.

I will say this...one of the problems with kids & Pot is that it leads them towards hanging out with the wrong crowd, which inevitably involves kids who are involved in harder drugs. This happened to a kid that I know well & he was certainly hanging with the wrong crowd & going down the wrong path...until he met a nice Girl & gave it up for her & it was the best thing to happen to him. I firmly believe that weed saps people of their ambition & motivation.

Pot inevitably leads people to hanginig around others into harder drugs? This happened to one kid you know, so it happens to all? You're dismissed from the jury.

Not at all. The food is better than many higher end restaurants that I have been to. Just outstanding.

Case Closed. The prosecution rests.

I've never gone but I have gotten the notices many times. There was one time that I actually planned on going and then the night before something more important came up. I would probably be the guy needing more evidence to vote guilty.
