idiots... i had friends that would go to walmart, grab stuff off the shelf and walk up to the customer service counter and say 'i lost my receipt and want to return this stuff'. they would give them cash back.

driving from one store to another sounds like a lot of wasted gas and time

I worked for one retailer that was stupid enough to merchandise some of their more expensive stuff right near the auxiliary exit doors. There was a parade of overcoats concealing theft going right out the door.

I will say that Lowe's has some of the more sophisticated camera set-ups of any retailer you'll find. The thiefs who were successful very likely have the acts caught on video, for what that's worth.
