Post subject:  towing a boat
renters came out today. trying to back the boat into the driveway, they hit the mailbox. went back and forth about 20 times before they finally got it backed in. i was just standing there watching, not knowing if they were the renters or if they were just some people trying to turn around. our driveway is big, but they were trying to get the trailer an extra 20ft up the driveway because there was stuff in it to unload.

the guy saw me watching as he hit the mailbox, and he got pissed at me. "well, am i hitting stuff or not?"

i replied "i dont know, i think you got it. just keep going"

all he had to do was back into the middle of the driveway where there would have been a 20ft cushion on either side to get it close enough. but no, he didnt want to unload from an extra 20ft away because hes 400lbs and obviously 'disabled' :roll:

if you can't drive with a trailer then you shouldn't own a boat. and if youre too fat to walk you shouldnt be on vacation, you should be in rehab

there were cars in the street just sitting there watching something. i walked out of the garage to look. it was a painful sight to see. its not hard to back in a trailer. how do people like that make a life for themselves? it mystifies me

its not the boat thats the problem. in wisconsin, there are endless places to enjoy it. its not like a snowmobile youll only use twice a year.

its the owners that create the problems. mainly the ones that plop down their credit card and buy one not knowing what theyre getting into.

my bro, for example. bought a crappy pos fishing boat for $500. but it was aluminum and had a nice trailer. gutted the entire thing, stripped the paint, created new planks and waterproofed them with the best polyurethane he could find, bought new seats -the whole 9 yards. has a little over $1500 in the whole thing, but now its a $5k boat at least. its fucking awesome. oh, and he knows how to back into places with it.

so, in his case, its a great asset to his life and its only a positive effect on mine too. hes really proud of it as well, and he will never lose money on it.

Of course you can have a lake house without owning a boat. Most lakes aren't big enough to make a boat worthwhile. I'd rather get jet skis.

summer weekly rentals. theyre not heated, but have full kitchens, bath, and two bedrooms, a living room and porch

you would probably like it a lot. its NOT the hilton. these are old cabins, they have needs, and not everything works perfectly. but they are functional, they will keep most bugs off you at night, and they are safe because i ripped out ALL the old wiring in every cabin and completely rewired them to code. they also have updated appliances, so none of them are gross anymore. and you would really like the lake, the fishing is a bit of a challenge but that makes it more exciting

the renters here now have been 'cleaning' all day in the one theyre staying in. im not sure what though, i went through that place a week ago, anything that they are doing they are just finding out it doesnt really get any cleaner. yes, the linoleum looks dirty because its old. yes, the curtains could use a wash, but they were recently and the first time someone has a bonfire everything smells like smoke. yes, the deck has tree debris all over it- THAT SHIT NEVER STOPS FALLING.

i told the guy 'hey, just enjoy the place for what it is.'. if they want a luxury resort then pay $1500 for the week and go down the road. luckily most people arent this bad... they can back in their trailers and they absolutely love this place.

You have to travel west of 94 and north of 120 before you get to any lakes anyway...and the Chain and Fox River is quite large.

I'd rather get a waverunner.

Surprised that a man so technical in many aspects of the industrial area would not be aware of 'MArine Grade' poly, for just such applications.

it is a losing proposition, but you have to know that going in. Getting my first boat on Friday...yes, it will be a money pit, but most hobbies and entertainment outlets cost money. the highlight is a now have a kickass view of fireworks with my choice of cold beer with selected friends.

That's worth $$ to me.

My parents have owned seven boats at this point...possibly 8, and 3 wave runners.

Walter, I used to be able to see the Mineola and Venetian Night fireworks from my back yard on Pistakee Lake.

btw, my bro worked as a mixoligist at a valspar plant for like 5 years. im pretty sure he knows more than you and me about paints and shit like that

I live right by the chain o' lakes. One of my best friends ran across a very inexpensive 19' Century. We and our spouses hang out more than I can count and our kids are the same age. this was a no-brainer. If I get out there 4-5 times this year, I'll be thrilled.

Yes, it will cost a few pennies, but like my motorcycle...it's therapy and peace of mind.

I know where you're talking about, Doug. Great spot! The sandbar in Petite Lake...not the bar, but the real sandbar in the water....now THAT's a party!

It sounds more like the place they show on the news when reporting about a drowning where "alcohol was involved".
