you know what it is? these lifers who never played sports beyond high school or college and have been in sports media for a long time are doing the equivalent of territorial pissings when they stake out their #safespace on the airwaves upon encountering athletes in media. the last thing they want is to have the alphas who sonned them all throughout highschool/college/in-life to show up and suddenly be better than them at their chosen/settled-for profession by virtue of the fact that they were athletes and they "know more" than the guys who have been doing this for however-many years. therefore, you gotta dismiss all of the platitudes that these athletes preach on air (as they only used them their whole career when dealing with the media) and convince everyone that athletes dont have any special insight into the game that the professional observers have. THIS IS *OUR* HOUSE etc etc.
so yeah, i wouldnt be surprised if all these professional sports-talker types get scared shitless that dumbass athletes showing up can not only do the sports-analysis part of their job, but also do it better than them by default, so they carefully condition their audience over the long term to reject the general MO of athletes in the hopes of getting them hooked to a special brand of nurturing sports radio milk from the teat of our radio providers like dan bernstein.
