To be honest, I kind of thought it was known he bet on the Reds as a player. As it said it in the Dowd report. Even if he denied it.

I actually read a ton of that report when it came out. Kind of fascinating to see what a liar Rose was and to what lengths he tried to go to in order to hide his gambling. He rarely placed the bets. He had a guy place the bets for him, but Pete remained in direct communication with the guy who placed the bets. Phone records showed Pete calling his guy, then his guy calling in the bets, then the guy would call back to the Reds dugout phone. All in a matter of 5 minutes almost every night.

Look at the numbers this guy bet every night....$2000 a game.

Letting in a guy that has never come clean is a dangerous thing to consider.

I thought he should be a HOF'er before yesterday and still do. All yesterday did was provide another piece of evidence that a guy who we ALL knew was a liar and a cheat is still a liar and a cheat. Because Rose has acted like an insuferable assbag about theHOF, the average fan seems to love to cruicify him for this and it's really too bad.

Lot of bad guys in the HOF BUT anyone who threatened the integrity of the game should not be allowed in,that simple except for Gaylord Perry of course.

A guy who put his gambling slips before the health and welfare of his players is not a sympathetic figure. Add the fact that he lies about it to this day and aany rational look at the situation provides zero reason to let him back in to baseball.

Not necessarily, but no guy who we know lost games on purpose has been allowed in yet. Joe Jackson should never get in either.

Since the Black Sox scandal, there has always been a rule written in stone that if you gamble, you're out. Everyone knows this.

Pete Rose should never be in the Hall of Fame.

I assume Rose still has a major gambling problem and to a degree, it is another reason to not let him back into the game in anyway. That includes being let into a park at this point.

Someone should start a Hall of Shame in Cooperstown.

It's too bad that other assbags are in the HOF and the ALL TIME HITS LEADER isn't.

I agree with Rozner that the timing of this is peculiar....right before the All-Star game in Cincy that Rose is supposed to attend. It's like someone wanted Manfred (or maybe Manfred himself wanted) to be put in a position where he would find it impossible to reinstate Rose.

There are powerful people in baseball who blame Rose in part for Giamatti's death. I'm not sure that's fair, but he definitely put a lot of needless stress on the man. He used his defenders to attempt to impugn Giamatti's character. You can see- even in this forum- how many defenders that lowlife has.

Dowd knows a lot more than he put in the report simply because he didn't have hard evidence like betting slips, all he had was the word of other guys who weren't exactly upstanding citizens. But there's a lot more out there. What came out this week is just another Rose lie. Eventually it will come out that he went against his own team on occasion. I wonder if anyone will still defend him when that happens.

Well, I don't think the Hall of Fame ignores the fact that he has the most hits of all-time. That's a fact. I'm not sure he needs the honor of a plaque though. And even if he were to go in, I think it should be after he's dead. I think it would be unseemly to allow this asswipe to take a victory lap around Cooperstown while a bunch of toothless hillbillies from Newport and Covington wearing Reds paraphernalia cheered him on.

Do you think that if they took a poll of the fans, the majority would want him in? The people who actually pay to visit the HOF are the toothless hillbillies, not BBBWA members or anyone in the commissioners office. I doubt the steroid guys would get the same pass from the fans if put to a vote. If the fans want him in he should be in.

I disagree with that. The fans might want a lot of things. The fans are idiots. They foolishly cheered Sammy and Mark as they "saved" baseball and then turned on them and played the part of naive children whose dreams had been crushed, when anyone with a brain should have realized at the time just how fucking phony that shitshow was.

And now the fan can't seem to understand the difference between guys doing everything they can to win (as self-serving as it may have been) and guys who lost games on purpose. Rose is worse than 100 Barry Bondses. And fuck Joe Jackson too. He also has his defenders who cite his .375 in that World Series without knowing all the funky plays at key moments he was involved in.

If the game isn't on the up and up, it's just like pro wrestling or the NBA. And at that point, who cares? Steroids may have injured the integrity of the records (although I would argue that numbers always have to be viewed in context), but they didn't injure the integrity of the games. Cheating to lose is far worse than cheating to win.

I think every steroid user should be in. There's no fucking way Pete Rose should be in. Betting on baseball is one line no player should cross. The arrogance and idiocy to do it is the simplest reason to keep him out.

The problem with the steroid users is that it gets all blurry. I don't think anyone could argue that Bonds and Clemens don't belong in on their accomplishments. These guys were clearly great players. And I don't even necessarily buy the narrative that Bonds was a Hall of Famer "before" he began using something. Before he began using the specialty heavy cola, sure. But I could never say that Rafael Palmiero was a better player than Will Clark in spite of his juiced up numbers. And I don't know where Sammy fits. I sure as fuck couldn't say he was a better player than Dick Allen.

In a league where 3,000 hits is an amazing accomplishment, he had over 4,200. Hall of Fame ... a place where the best players in the history of the game reside.

Enough said.

Considering the sheer volume of bets that Rose was placing every day, one could argue that on the days Rose didn't bet on the Reds to win, he was essentially sending a signal to some of his associates that he thought they would lose. Of course, we wouldn't know whether that meant he simply didn't like their chances when 100-yr old Jerry Reuss was starting....or, penciled him in because he wanted them to lose.

JORR..keeping this to Pete Rose, I agree. Wait until that Fuckstick dies and then he can go in.

We'll never know if he bet on his team to lose and intentionally tanked stuff. I'd tend to believe he didn't, but he had his chance to play nice. From the time he was busted, he should have done everything MLB asked him and said "yes sir". He has made an ass of himself this whole time.

He really is a piece of shit. What a waste!
