i dont know it seemed like a good package when i bought it. everything else with premiums in this range have $5k+ deductibles.

got great dental for $35 a month too. apparently if i go out of network there is no charge, all major work is paid for. not sure what out of network means for me but we will see.

i dont think so. most premiums are $300-$400

if you study all the available packages, you realize there is pretty much no way around spending at least ~$2500/year, and thats if you don't actually see a doctor. And if you dont pay, the tax penalty is $2699- see how this works now?

after deductibles are paid, it shoots up to ~$4k/yr.

but again, its a law now and there is no way around it... so basically what they did is raise taxes on those who dont have insurance to the tune of $2k+ per year.

and if you map it all out- 26 years old to 66 years old (when youre required to buy insurance yourself) it equates to $110,000 in a lifetime- money that you are required to pay even if you NEVER see a doctor. And that easily doubles if you regularly see doctors and get treatment.

this figure is about cut in half if you only make ~$30k/yr, but its actually worse because $30k/yr isnt enough to live on your own in the first place, so the $150/month premiums really hurt.

but again, the alternative would be to just raise everyones taxes and go single payer... but we dont want socialism so this is what we have.

sort of seems like this thing is working the way it is supposed to. Health care is hugely expensive and somebody needs to pay for it. Individuals have to take at least some ownership of their own health and livestyle choices.

yup. I know my employer used to spend $1100/month, but we all knew that was a bad agreement for them to choose whatever insurance pool they were in. we even wanted to opt out and just buy our own at $350/month but they wouldnt let us... they just complained they couldnt give us raises because our health insurance was so high. idiots.

but dont worry about your employer. you are making money for them. it doesnt hurt them to pay your health insurance, quite the opposite and if they make you feel like your health insurance is a burden then find a new employer.

kids are covered under any insurance plan up to 26 though. again its the 30's and 40's year olds that are paying for all this because theyre the ones not really getting the benefits.

makes sense though. you cant just pay $300 a month and use 10x that in services every year.

your insurance. i dont get what you mean maybe? example, if i had two kids right now i wouldnt pay a dime more for my kids... but i would likely go to the doctor more and end up paying that $1300 deductible every year......

but thats why you cant focus on the monthly premiums. they dont matter that much. you need to add up monthlies + deductible and weigh that against the out of pocket maximum (if its more than your deductible)

i almost lost it two days ago

apparently my 'auto payments' werent on auto. i owed $300. paid it 2 hours before the deadline.

but if the individual mandate is abolished, i want a fuckin refund. im only paying for this crap because its the law.

edit- i just seen what might happen is the feds might not be allowed to pay the states the tax credits. that wont happen, believe me. this is just more republican waste of time shit.

but in the chance it does, the premiums would then be higher than the tax penalty... which means 8 million people would stop paying their premiums.

Regardless of one's stance on the ACA, the depressing thing is that this law was passed without legislators knowing what was in it, and now the SCOTUS has basically said it doesn't matter what was actually in it.

Correct, it sets a really, really, really bad precedent. It doesn't matter what the law actually says it matters what someone feels it says or should say or if a judge is fond of something.


SCOTUS and it's rulings confirmed that the law is a total failure of Congress and a Rube Goldberg Machine that was never intended to actually function. Instead of striking it down and forcing Congress to be competent they (I know not all of them were for/against, Scalia excoriated Roberts) just said "No problem, we'll just say it says what you want it to say or what we think it should say and it's fine, no need to do your jobs." Although past rulings have made me question their sanity I would say this one confirms that "they" (Roberts) are insane.

Instead of at least getting the Pee Wee Herman breakfast machine we get the Doc Brown blow up breakfast and light the dog on fire machine.

Hopefully the Obergefell v. Hodges ruling coming up kills Scalia.

This doesn't set a precedent at all. If you haven't been keeping up with the debate a few Google searches may help you understand that there was precedent for this case.

Despite what I thought and still somewhat believe the law hasn't been a failure.

I'm aware of the coercion arguments but that doesn't seem to be some lock, stock and key thing for this to be totally awesome and cool and totally fine. It's a bad outcome and does set a dangerous precedent for future laws that come to the Supreme Court. In SomeGuy's humble opinion this places the court in dangerous territory.

As for the law? It isn't even anything. It isn't the law that was voted into law by Congress and it's been unilaterally changed by the executive branch (I don't remember Congress being involved maybe I'm wrong) so many times it's something but no one knows what. For me, it isn't even about Left-Right-Obama-Whatever, it's about the whole thing being a total fiasco on multiple levels, having the institutions that are supposed to share power and protect us citizens completely fail and act against their charter and thus us. The vitriol against and the flag-waving for are all identity politics that just show we've lost the game.

It's all just very frustrating for SomeGuy to watch.

The game has been over for all of us for quite some time.
