Lord President Obama has changed the name of Mount McKinley to Mount Denali, or just Denali. Dont really care either way, I am sure the McKinley family doesnt agree, which I see their point, really is a slap in the face to a former President. The part that is always so disingenious is that he does this right before his 3 day trip to Alaska. Its like handing out skittles to a 1st grade class right before you speak for career day and tell the kids how great it is being a CPA. I have a feeling they will applaude for you. Texas should be Mexico too right? And what about California? Utah? Arizona? Didnt the native Americans have region names? Well, I know who is happy. Considering the average American has no clue who McKinley was, I don't think it's a problem. |

Considering the average American has no clue who McKinley was, I don't think it's a problem. Tradtional names of tons of things and this request has been in for 50 years. The actual name change, I dont have a problem with it....just the timing and appeasement of people in general. |

I would guess the number of similar requests for changes are in the 1000's and none of them get processed. Can I get Taylor st back from Alex Dana's family while we are at it? ![]() |

I didn't realize that until I looked it up but you are pretty much right. I am fine with the name change. |

From Wikipedia... The name Mount McKinley was chosen by William Dickey, a New Hampshire-born Seattleite who led four gold prospectors digging the sands of the Susitna River in June 1896. An account written on his return to the contiguous United States appeared in The New York Sun on January 24, 1897, under the title Discoveries in Alaska (1896). Dickey wrote, "We named our great peak Mount McKinley, after William McKinley of Ohio, who had been nominated for the Presidency, and that fact was the first news we received on our way out of that wonderful wilderness." By most accounts, the naming was politically driven; Dickey had met many silver miners who zealously promoted Democratic presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan's ideal of a silver standard, inspiring him to retaliate by naming the mountain after a strong proponent of the gold standard. |

Hell, name it after the Paul family then. I think it's a great honeypot for irrational President-haters. |

I guess I like Denali as a mountain name even if the park is named that. What I find weird though is renaming stuff. Whether a mountain, bridge or school if someone was important enough to name a major thing after them shouldn't that be perpetual? Unless it is like the Jared Fogle school or OJ Simpson bridge? |
