Venus vs Serena, tonight. Serena going for her first same season Grand Slam. Two of the sweetest, classiest people in sports. The Williams sisters off-the-cuff post-match interviews/speeches be studies in chill-humble-graceful-sportsmanship.

I have wagers on Serena winning, 2 sets to 1. Plus extra prop bets on Venus taking the first set. And then a long shot prop bet that Venus wins the first set 7-6. (In a tie-break, which tie-breaks seem to favor the more consistent service game).

Venus has been playing well of late. If nerves are an issue, they're more likely to hit the younger Serena with much more on the line here than her older, not going for a Grand Slam sister.

But I expect Serena to chill out and pound out a match victory in sets 2 and 3.

When they win, maybe. I don't watch tennis like I used to, so maybe they've matured, but I don't remember anyone being more churlish in defeat than the Williamses.

Tennis probably won't make it to any of the TVs at the bowling alley tonight.

Bowlers probably aren't fans of sports.

Tsonga, after losing the first two sets, has pushed depending US Open champ Marin Cilic to a deciding 5th set. Since they're on the main court/Arthur Ashe Stadium, Williams sisters' match delayed til Tsonga-Cilic finish.

I have seen some of the US Open here and there and had a side thought. That venue looks amazing. Very visually pleasing with the colors and the stadium and all those courts. The question I had though is WTF do they do with all that the rest of the year?

Show me a good loser...as they say. They usually don't talk to the loser right after; letting the loser hit the showers and then do a presser. I vaguely recall some chirpy post-loss press conference comments by Serena toward Sharapova when Sharapova first joined the tour and beat Serena a couple times in a row. But then Serena improved her serve and has beaten Sharapova the last 15 times they've played.

I believe the Williams are Jehovah's Witness and thus say little-to-nothing in public about politics/religion/etc.

Kim Kardashian's waddling up to Arthur Ashe stadium now. Why.

With the whole of the Flushing Meadows campus? People just play tennis there. Well, not at the stadium courts, but the lower courts are open to the public.

That is cool CH. Just seemed like a lot of overhead to me. Maybe they run camps for poor kids and such.

I'm sure they do all that and more. Think the tennis courts at Grant Park on a much bigger scale.

The U.S. Open is a fascinating event. I recommend David Foster Wallace's essay on it, "Democracy and Commerce at the U.S. Open," found in Both Flesh and Not but probably bouncing around the internets somewhere.

Finding out that I was completely terrible at tennis back in high school was one of the ruder awakenings of my life. Just crushed me. I don't know why I was surprised, given that I have no athletic prowess other than running for long periods of time and swimming for long periods of time. I guess I figured I was good at whacking around in backyard badminton that this would translate to the power, finesse, and split-second geometric analysis that compose tennis. Some wounds never heal.

The U.S. Open venue looks nice though I don’t like the corporate logos on the nets. Personally, I would rather be a spectator at Centre Court at Wimbledon.

I wouldn't mind taking a couple rackets and hitting relaxed balls with the GF. Seems fun even though I am too old to be competitive at it.

1 set each. Venus started strong, lost her serve, got it back in the 2nd set.

Tennis is a great sport. Love to play. Been coaching our high school teams the past few years. Great sport for kids to get involved in, something they can play the rest of their lives.

The Williams sisters are amazing athletes. Always fun to see them play each other

Fwiw, that was the first time I've watched a full match in probably ten years. Not a lot of rallies, but I enjoyed the hell out of it. For me, it's always fun to watch competitors that have more power on display than virtually all of their challengers.

To watch the best in the world completely lose it in the second set and then refocus the way she did, even though Venus came out strong in the third set, damn. Not quite MJeff, but certainly better than Lebron.

We were watching, it got good for a moment in the 2nd set and then the 3rd Serena just had enough.

Venus' first serve keeps pace with Serena, but her 2nd serve drops off well below Serena's.

Venus went to the net more, but didn't pick up any more points than her sister at the net.
