evidently this kid posted a thread on 4chan's /r9k/ board yesterday about doing this..... argh. this can only be good for the future of "anonymous imageboards"

(btw this screencap isn't a longform one and evidently whoever took it was in europe cuz the timestamps show the posts being made early early this morning but other ones i've seen show it around ~4pm in the USA (prolly pacific time i'd guess) so that jump from pacific time to european time would show the discrepancy between 4pm-Weds/1am-Thurs

As pro 2nd amendment as I am, hard to ignore the statistics at this point. A reasonable discussion should be had about increased gun control, but that MUST be part of addressing the much longer mental health issue in this country.

Having included that exceedingly important caveat, I believe I'll agree with it.

the issue is that people who shouldn't have access to guns are getting access to guns. we don't have a great track record taking care of mentally ill people.

honestly, the "mentally ill" argument is getting just as tiresome as the "too many guns" argument.

I think some of the mental health responses are due to people who live in a simplistic world that believes people who shoot up schools are simply "evil."

The gun and mental health issue will never change. I accepted awhile ago that is is how things will be from now on. It seems like the majority of the population thinks that extreme people are just born that way when it's really society that creates extreme people. American society is too fucked beyond repair in it's own way.

I think I agree with what he is saying. By dubbing these shooters as evil it absolves the community at large from having a hand in creating the "monster". If it was recognized that there was something that could of been done by society, these people may get more help.

The problem always turns to who pays for it since all govt's are broke.

No one has called anyone evil.

Mental Health has nothing to do with people simply being evil. Sure, of course there's a certain percentage of people that are born with various chemical/hormonal imbalances which creates a personality that society deems 'abnormal'. Those tend to be easy to find as they grow up and we still do a piss poor job of treating them.

The much larger subset of the mental health issue are those who have never committed a crime, can easily pass a background check but as a result of their youth, society, parents whatever, they feel the only way to find peace/get noticed is to get a gun and kill innocents.
We are 1000x at identifying these warning signs and getting them help.

I think we probably agree for the most part. But I can assure you there are many people who view people who do things like this as simply "evil." They chalk it up to a bad seed. There are biological, sociological, and psychological reasons things like this occur. I think citing "mental health" in general is probably an overly-simplistic way of saying that the problem is nuanced. It doesn't come down to good people and bad people.

I don't have solutions - I fully admit that. But the reason these things keep happening is not simply due to "bad people." These people may have very well been "good people" at one time... but then something went awry in their brains. It would at least be worthwhile to explore more proactively what that was and how we can prevent it.

I don't know why you thought I'd 'get past' an opinion.

I'm forming the opinion through observations and reasoning.

Double postin' G

And I don't think of it as "getting past" something...opinions evolve through life and experience.

Trust me...mine have changed over the years...dealing with a bi-polar ex wife will do that to you.
