Anyone have one of these? Apparently a lot of people are using these now. You cancel your cable, keep the internet and use the box to stream everything. Thinking about going this route as my cable is too expensive and I gotta cut costs somewhere. |

We've got 2 Roku 3's, which are awesome. Amazon prime and Netflix. Not sure about Android boxes. |

Ruku, Chromecast, my son's Plex account all make us mostly good. But if I knew how to stream sports to TV (ESPN, CSN, NBC Sports Extra, CBS (HD broadcast signal is bad out here)) with a decent and reliable picture I would fire dish in a second. |

But if I knew how to stream sports to TV (ESPN, CSN, NBC Sports Extra, CBS (HD broadcast signal is bad out here)) with a decent and reliable picture I would fire dish in a second. i can do all of that cuz i know people and i'm hooked up like that on the actual sports streaming out the wazoo; i'm seriously lamenting my pakistan v england first test cricket match starts @ 1am this morning cuz i love waking up and having cricket with me til ~1pm. but yeah there's people who swear by roku and i've had a friend trying to convert me to plex, which means all that you need is a means of dumping computer streams to your HDTV.... most new laptops have HDMI ports on the side so you can dump video/pictures out ofc it, tho i reckon these android cable boxes exist to undercut getting a cheap $250-350 laptop to use as a stream machine. i think roku has depositories where ppl dump episodes of shows and streams of games, as my friend with a roku keeps on trying to get me to "watch all my shit" via his roku thing but i've got all my streams covered and i dont technically need the box to do it. in terms of dumping cable, man, only thing i'd worry about longterm is if TPP/legislature comes in and the powers that be get teeth and a means of fucking with regular ol pirates (cuz right now they just randomly grab people and try to slam them with $10k+ lawsuits that they'll settle for 2 grand to try and scare people en masse) then the whole idea of "fuck cable i'll get everything for free/ish over the internet connection i already pay for" will be a bit more treacherous.... ....but hey we're all outlaws at heart, eh? |

Sini, I've been online watching whatever I want for quite a few years with no interference. Now the Comsuck caps may cause us to rethink things. Or we may just go Comcast business Internet . |

Or we may just go Comcast business Internet . yeah, i know.... over the years i've only gotten one e-mail from my ISP saying NBC/universal notified them that i downloaded an episode of caprica and please cut it out b4 we seek litigation..... and since then i threw on peerblock and tried to stick to canadian/UK shows and fringier stuff and i've been good. i'm just saying if TPP goes through and over time they might start getting more clever about fucking with us re: streams/torrents/etc...... i'm just saying that i wouldn't sit here and 100.0% bet on 5-15 years of for-sure 100% ducking cable to save $$$, that's all. they're actively trying to figure out how to monetize this. btw a year or two ago my dad got some lawyerish notificatins that he was getting named in a lawsuit for illegally downloading the hurt locker. that was because of some company called *volt*.* (aka "volt/voltage/something") who boasted that they could MONETIZE PIRACY for people who paid them (which is ironic with the hurt locker cuz it only originally got attention and thusly later-awards cuz it was leaked online and got a lot of attention from the leak) --- so the end result was that they just went and grabbed a shit ton of IPs all willy nilly, claimd that they found an IP in a hurt locker torrent assigned to my dad's account at the time, and hey we're suing you for $10k+ and it's gonna be nasty but hey you know talk to your lawyer and we can prolly work out something for $2500. that scheme preyed on the ignorance of middle-class-ppl-with-disposable-$$$ to not know that all these giant potnetial group lawsuits get thrown out (cuz they file them locally in DC so how does that have juristiction in IL if not a fed case?) and the whole burden of proof is basically this company saying HEY THIS IP WAS IN THE TORRENT CLUSTER AND THAT'S 100% SUREFIRE GUILT.... and in our case neither me nor my brother had ever downloaded the hurt locker, my parents didnt even know how to, so it was a complete bullshit thing and they were pressuring my dad with a few letters to settle for 2 grand b4 they get sued for $10k+ and etc..... i told him to stay the course and it'd get thrown out, and indeed it did..... but still he has a 100% NO TORRENTS EVER policy at his house now. so what im saying is in the future i'm sure "they're" thinking up ways to get smaller sums of $$$ for-sure compafred to ^^^^that^^^^^, and while you can ditch cable and use the internet right now i just wouldn't count on it forever, that's all. |

I use websites to watch programs available on cable. I look at it as "borrowing". |

I have a Roku 2 and a Roku 3. Love them. Since I pay for my parents' cable TV and internet with Comcast, I can get things that require carrier authentication by logging into their account. That lets me get ESPN/ESPN2/NBCSN. I use the NowhereMan app for the Roku to get live streams of BBC World News, Sky News, CNN International, and Bloomberg. I can also get Last Week Tonight's main segment on a couple of day delay. I got a digital TV antenna (forgot the name, but it's a flat panel) for OTA. Don't get 2/11, get 5/7/9/32 pretty well if the weather is good, but I live about 25 miles SW of the city. After the one-time expense for the Roku, it saves me $65/month. I don't miss it at all. |

Netflix and chill was created for this reason. Put cheap alcohol inside the bottle of an empty $40 bottle of alcohol too. I can guarantee you that 9 times out of 10 they won't notice the difference. |

Edit: Cheap vodka and tequila are your friends. Just redress the bottles so they can leave with dignity. |
