Last month, Cory Jones, a top editor at Playboy, went to see its founder Hugh Hefner at the Playboy Mansion.

In a wood-paneled dining room, with Picasso and de Kooning prints on the walls, Mr. Jones nervously presented a radical suggestion: the magazine, a leader of the revolution that helped take sex in America from furtive to ubiquitous, should stop publishing images of naked women.

Mr. Hefner, now 89, but still listed as editor in chief, agreed. As part of a redesign that will be unveiled next March, the print edition of Playboy will still feature women in provocative poses. But they will no longer be fully nude.

Its executives admit that Playboy has been overtaken by the changes it pioneered. “That battle has been fought and won,” said Scott Flanders, the company’s chief executive. “You’re now one click away from every sex act imaginable for free. And so it’s just passé at this juncture.”

For a generation of American men, reading Playboy was a cultural rite, an illicit thrill consumed by flashlight. Now every teenage boy has an Internet-connected phone instead. Pornographic magazines, even those as storied as Playboy, have lost their shock value, their commercial value and their cultural relevance.

Playboy’s circulation has dropped from 5.6 million in 1975 to about 800,000 now, according to the Alliance for Audited Media. Many of the magazines that followed it have disappeared. Though detailed figures are not kept for adult magazines, many of those that remain exist in severely diminished form, available mostly in specialist stores. Penthouse, perhaps the most famous Playboy competitor, responded to the threat from digital pornography by turning even more explicit. It never recovered.

Previous efforts to revamp Playboy, as recently as three years ago, have never quite stuck. And those who have accused it of exploiting women are unlikely to be assuaged by a modest cover-up. But, according to its own research, Playboy’s logo is one of the most recognizable in the world, along with those of Apple and Nike. This time, as the magazine seeks to compete with younger outlets like Vice, Mr. Flanders said, it sought to answer a key question: “if you take nudity out, what’s left?”

Kind of funny.

Nah. I let it grow out a year ago.

Its a good mens magazine. They have some good stuff in there.

if the naked pics prevent them from being sold in Airports, etc, then I understand why they might make this move.

Actually I found the cartoons to be more "interesting" than the pictures. The pictures are essentially fakes because of the all the airbrushing shit.

Yes, it was a right of passage. And it had at least a modicum of class. Today's young man has to make do with XHamster. But the real downfall of Playboy came when all the Playmates began to look alike- pneumatic airbrushed blondes, fake fucking Barbies. There was no longer room for an Elaine Morton, an Azizi Johari, a Hope Olson, a Karen Price, an Alana Soares, a Patti Farinelli, or a Liz Stewart.

Had a subscription for about 3 years and agree, the articles are excellent. The pictures aren't too
bad but not really why I got the magazine. I actually worked in multiple facets printing the magazine
for a company in Wisconsin, who I believe still does the printing. I was able to get the magazines two
weeks prior to them hitting newsstands. After I left that part of the business I got the subscription
because I really appreciated what it took to make the magazine.

They did when I worked there for 5 years. I would guess they would do what they could to keep that title along with
National Geographic and other large marquee names under their umbrella. I left there 11 years ago so I couldn't say for sure.
Are you familiar with Quad?

I figured that had to be the place you were talking about. It would have to be a pretty big outfit to print a magazine like that. I used to know a broad whose job it was to take care of the animals on the property of the main plant. They had peacocks and all kinds of shit.

The founder was a pretty interesting guy. It was a very cool place to work right out of college. I got a chance to work in all the plants in Wisconsin and
work and visit others across the country. Partied at the founders house a number of times, it was shocking when they found him dead on his property in 2002.
I went to the wake and it took me two hours standing in line just to get to the casket. Pretty impressive philanthropist.

I had an Uncle that was a photographer/ photo assistant for a number of years. He started when he was about 21. I always thought it was cool when he'd go on their college shoots and bring back the paraphernalia from the various shoots. I was too young to understand the complexities of the other stuff that went on in those shoots.
