Not many of you will hear about this movie, and for pretty good reason. It's not very good. It's Rob Zombie's new film, and say whatever you want about him (I've heard it all), he is usually at the very least a stunning visual director.
he could really use some screenwriting lessons, though. Beside "The Devil's Rejects", which is his reigning masterpiece, his films have had some severe flaws. I enjoyed "House" because it had a sick twisted fun enjoyment level as tasteless as it was. It was an entertaining film, even though it was a "borrowed" film from movies like "texas chainsaw" among others.
I liked "Halloween" for what it was, but it doesn't compare to the original. The sequel is still his worst effort as a filmmaker.
But this isn't far off. It's pointless, and some of the weird imagery is downright silly (a few people in the theatre obnoxiously laughed at it...).
I could see this being laughed off the screen at festivals, or jeered at. It doesn't have a third act and the narrative is sketchy at best. The premise is promising, as a DJ who receives a mysterious package that leads to her seeing and feeling strange things. But the dream sequences get irritatingly repetetive (and they're usually an indicator that the screenwriter is tapped out creatively).
not nearly enough humor in this film, and even the DJ scenes are a bit of a waste (and missed opportunities). The best things about the film are some of the opening witchcraft rituals and some of the atmospheric elements of the film, and the performance of Bruce Davison who almost always puts in a good effort.
I'd really like to see Zombie flesh out a good film again (pun intended). TDR is a good film, and I know Zombie's got another good one in him.
Till then, skip this one.
