The last scripted network tv shows I recall following were Homicide, X-Files...the first few seasons of Buffy. Sopranos/Six Feet Under/et al killed scripted network TV's cultural relevance and the media diaspora caused by the prevalence of internet-connected devices killed its ratings.

Wonder if the scripted network shows, like blockbuster movies in 2014, are targeted more to overseas audiences---who made Baywatch the biggest TV show in the history of the planet, while titties bouncing on the beach was an also-ran relegated to syndication in the US proper.

The last big culturally relevant network show, LOST, was basically a scripted version of network TV's meat and potatoes since ~2000: reality tv.
