People in some other threads pass judgement on why some of the evangelical right think and do weird shit. The people are way out to lunch in their heads. Germany I know is treating them as criminals or something? Even more strange is the amount of high profilers they lure in.

yes, some countries are pretty unkind to scientology. the US was one of those until the IRS caved after the massive amount of lawsuits the church waged against them.

it attracts high profile celebrities because it was somewhat bred in the hollywood community while hubbard was still alive. i think he knew that getting popular people like celebrities would make it look more credible and worthwhile. i wouldn't be surprised if some of the recruiting methods include promises of being on the same level with tom cruise, etc. and for celebrities, they're treated far differently than the regular scientologists. and for celebrities it's an easier life of scientology. they're not subjected to the harsher conditions.

most of the celebrity defectors are people who "got in trouble" by asking questions or disagreeing with their principles. with haggis it was gay rights (they are against homosexuality); with leah remini it was because she asked where david miscavige's wife was. but they've never been in "the hole" or have had to do the manual labor shit.

This was pretty great.

It's funny they didn't even bring up some of the other salacious details of Scientology like how David Miscavige's wife hasn't been heard of since 2007 outside of talking to the police once. I'm sure the lawyers for HBO said no to that one.

Yeah, that was one of the big reasons Leah Remini left. I'm surprised they didn't interview her. She led cheers for the doc on Twitter. Maybe she just didn't want to participate to that level.

Also no mention at all of the Lisa McPherson stuff.

I didn't know the Homeland actress was being groomed to be Cruise's girlfriend. She pissed him off on the first date and it was over.

Seems to me that in today's society that it really is remarkable they keep whatever the problems are secret. Maybe we are seeing the beginning of that opening up now.

No kidding. And they can't be taxed. And they buy real estate around the world to hide the money because it's suppose to be spent to get the exemption. How can this scam still happen in today's world? Not to mention the money that these leaders are hiding in their personal Swiss bank accounts.

They owed 1 billion in taxes in the early 90s. They filed lawsuits against IRS personal and they backed off. The IRS backed off? Really? That were that scared.

Not so secret in the last few years, though. It's crumbling. The Doc said only 50 thousand active members. That's nothing.

If Cruise breaks bad on them, it's OVER.

Their downfall will be Germany or something. They are not considered a religion there but a cult.

I was excited to see this but found it incredibly boring. Fell asleep halfway through and it's likely this will rot in my DVR list. I also found the Sinatra documentary to be boring as fuck, which surprised me.
