Any thoughts on the original Late Late Show with Tom Snyder, which Letterman produced (almost as a favor for bumping The Tomorrow Show when he got Late Night)? Quirky little show, one of those shows that made me feel like I was up way past my bedtime when I'd catch it.

Wasn't the Snyder show the one Akroyd would lampoon on SNL?

That would have been the Tomorrow Show, I'm almost sure, but yeah, same guy.

What did jay do?

When Jay Leno decided to accept NBC's offer to return as host of the Tonight Show and to replace Conan O’Brien after just a few months, it rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. The animosity was highlighted at the time when Jimmy Kimmel repeatedly excoriated Jay Leno in an ambushed segment on the Jay Leno Show (Leno’s primetime show after stepping down as host of the Tonight Show the first time).

My recollection was that it went more like this:

- When Leno 'retired' and the show went to Conan, Leno came out of left field and (essentially) demanded an hour for a new program, in this case prior to the local affiliate evening news .... said show completely bombed in the ratings and pissed off every affiliate around because nobody was watching that drek or, as a consequence, their local news channel;

- NBC and Jay decided to fix this by moving Jay's shitshow to (in our time zone) 10:30, meaning the Tonight Show would be bumped to 11:30 (aka Conan's old timeslot) with Fallon then also being bumped to 12:30am ... this is what pissed off Conan who told them to fuck off, he wouldn't do it, it was a breach ... they then went into discussion for their separation and the rest is history.

I think you're about 95% right. The only thing that doesn't sound right to me was Leno demanding a new show from NBC. I think NBC came to him because they were bombing with scripted dramas in the 10/9c hour and didn't think they could shake their Leno addiction, voila, they keep him on and dramatically and I mean dramatically reduce costs in prime time. I think that, more than anything, was the impetus for the show. But yes, the affiliates revolted because his shitty show killed their late local news.

Bottom line,Conan bombed at 10:30.

I'm a fan of Conan, but he is dying a slow death with his constant guest list of C and D celebs.

Yeah, Leno sucked, but anyone who says Conan was funny at 10:35 is a liar. That show really blew.

I don't know how Dave kept it together. That montage was great. I had forgotten about a lot of that. What a great show...especially the earlier years. That really reminded me how groundbreaking a lot of it was.

I'll always have a soft spot for Letterman. When he was on in the morning, my Uncle (who was partially paralyzed) and I would watch the show and then talk on the phone about it. Uncle Don was in his late 60's at the time and absolutely loved the guy.

Father time keeps rolling along.

I used to sneak out of bed late at night to watch him do dumb stuff. It felt dangerous, like I wasn't supposed to watch. I kept the volume low, sat inches from the set, ready to hit the power if my mom came out.

Never was a Conan guy....kinda figured CH for that type of stuff....guess I was wrong...

Is Fallon considered funny? or have the "Playing 'Give peace a chance' with Toothbrushes on KFC buckets with JT ' bits run dry yet?

Conan had some good stuff on Late Night but I was never an avid fan during his peak years. I was into Craig Kilborn as a kid for some odd reason. Conan's Tonight Show was beyond toothless, and that "never be cynical and never give up on your dreams" speech he gave at the end of it was sickening, a complete 180 from the awesome cynicism he brought to The Simpsons. Internet fanboys ruined him like they ruin everything.

My thoughts on Jimmy Fallon are in this thread of ours, but you'll have to read some sinicalypse posts to the same effect, and I know you don't like that, so I can save you the time and just say that I hate Jimmy Fallon.

I just meant how he went out kicking and screaming from the Tonight Show. Twice. Especially the first time when he weaseled his way back in.

Plus Dave is more of a genuine person. Jay is the typical Hollywood phony.

Hell yeah. I mean if you look at her in the first couple of season of Sienfield you can understand why she went through men then after the J Pertermen stuff she just morphed into a raging sex goddess.

I first watched Dave as a young kid for one summer right before the CBS move and thought he was great with all the bizarre bits. Must have been 1992 because I remember the Olympics being televised as well. Never enjoyed the show as much after the CBS move. He got too soft with celebrities and creeped on the women too much. It wasn't a tongue-in-cheek creepy like Ferguson but a genuine creepy.

Dude he mentioned they were his favorite band , played his first show after his heart surgery. Have to cut him a little slack for self indulgence on the last segment of his show

So bored from watching this weird activity where hirsute white guys from Canada (and Finland) skim along an iced surface for no apparent reason that I flew through the last week of Letterman shows. That's an interesting point but it's hard to say that subversion in any form of music has existed in the last 20 years. Maybe even rap. The drum fills in that song give me a boner like a Hastert at a junior high school wrestling meet though. I was also embarrassingly affected by John Mayer's American Pie cover.
