I know, a little late to the game with this one.
You know I enjoy those Paranormal Activity movies. I had some alone time last night and saw this on Netflix so I had a go of it. I enjoyed it. Not quite as formulaic as the first two episodes (didn't see 4 yet either) but not all that different either.
This one moves away from the cursed family. It involves the Mexican maid from PA 2 (although the don't really acknowledge her as the maid from it). She lives with her son and his family now in an apartment complex. She has a teenaged son. There is a witch who lives beneath them.
The boy and his friends get caught up with things involving the coven from the previous movies through this witch.
Things happen not unlike things from previous movies. However, the cast seems much more charismatic and fun loving with this project so the footage of their everyday life is far more interesting. You know how this goes: the first 45 minutes is slow with backround; the second 45 picks up but still slow; the final 15 are a whirlwind.
Anyway, this one involves Mexican street gangs with uzis and I applaud any horror movie that moves beyond the tribulations of white suburban teens. Fun but old ladies shouldn't be able to school gang members on violence so easily.
They really give you a nice, interesting spin at the end. SPOILER (even though the movie is years old). The last survivor is running through the farmhouse where the rituals always happen. He runs through a closet door and is teleported (while the camera rolls) to Katie and Micah's house in PA 1. This is the moment just before the end of PA 1 where Katie is possessed and walks out of the bedroom (off camera). Well, the survivor picks up from where she moves off camera. He films her walking down the stairs in a trance and grabbing a knife. Obviously he is scared from being chased, teleported and viewing her in a trance but he needs help. He calls to her then grabs her. As we saw in PA 1, Katie screams for Michah. Now in PA 1 we believe she did this to draw him downstairs. This movie indicates that she screams for him because she sees the teleported boy as an intruder. She then stabs Michah in the confusion rather than because of possession. Immediately, the demon is then teleported to the house as well and kills the boy. Again, it was really an interesting way to end.
It also got Katie Featherstone more screen time. The woman has appeared in each of these PA movies. I don't think she has appeared in anything else. However, I think she has made enough coin just from these movies where she can live a comfortable life and never have to work. Good for her.
