Was surprised to not see a thread created for this (unless I missed it). Loved it. Heavy/sad themes but Casey Affleck sold it well. The reveal was of course heart-wrenching but it also worked (I thought) as a narrative device as well (it made so many things that happened up to that point make sense, and also set up future scenes nicely). If you're into dramas that explore the inner emotions of characters on the screen, even if those emotions weigh on you as much as a mountain would, then you should see this film.

I can see why he won an Oscar for it but the movie did not. It isn't exactly an uplifting movie. I thought it was good to very good.

Not exactly directed at you, but I hate the "happy ending/uplifting ending" bullshit. Drama is drama - stuff happens that is sad, happy, meh, etc., and films should be able to capture any one of those experiences without being penalized for not capturing a specific experience (usually happiness/positivity/redemption/etc.). For me movies like Manchester are a relief from all the sappy garbage.

I agree and that is what helps make the movie good; it doesn't have to go to a "happy place" at the end. I was more commenting that Oscar voting usually doesn't reward movies that end like that, but does reward actors in those movies. Look at Life Is Beautiful for another example.
