I think it's pretty close to the opposite of that.

People's lives have gotten harder over the past 40 years. The transition to two-income households has been completed. Wages are largely stagnant in real terms. The work week is lengthening. Public education, public services and the public sphere in general are disintegrating. These large-scale social transformations put enormous pressure on the quality of domestic life. One such visible symptom of this pressure is the lack of tidy housekeeping that has become prevalent today. People have become dirtier neither by choice nor as a result of character flaws; rather, they're messy because that's what the new social (dis)order demands.

Can't buy this. It doesn't take much to keep a tidy place. It's definitely a character trait(I wouldn't even call it a flaw).

Add a pet (or pets) and a child into the mix, and yes it can take a lot.

Can't buy that. You probably just don't grasp how inadequate your cleanliness standards are. Post some pictures of your residence for us so we can judge you.

Pet no, kids yeah sure, but I don't think this show or TM's post was directed solely at those with kids.

Well, I do think it's true that people w/o kids have it easier with regards to cleaning. But even my childless but slutty sister uses a cleaning lady because she works so many hours.

All that but I fold sweaters. I was told they'll sag if they hang.

Yup. It helps when you only have a jail cell sized room and not much stuff. That's all your house is - a place to keep your stuff. If you didn't have so much stuff, you wouldn't need a house. You could just walk around all the time. A house is just a pile of stuff with a cover on it.

I'm a lot more sentimental than my wife. She doesn't really give a shit about "things". She'll throw stuff out that I would think she would consider precious. I'll ask her, "Doesn't that mean something to you?" And she'll say, "Yeah, but I don't need it anymore."

She tries to put this rule on me that if I bring something into the house I have to get rid of something. That especially applies to clothes. I mostly ignore her but I will occasionally get rid of something just to keep the peace. The other day I showed her a picture of me from 1990. She said, "You still have that shirt, don't you?"
