That one bathtub scene I think even Gaga makes fun of his imitation

Are you saying that it was actually an inside joke? If so, I suddenly like the movie better.

In watching the movie it seemed to me she was making a meta joke about the way he chose his character to speak. I don't know if she is joking about him imitating Elliott but she does the gravely voice affect.

but while we are on the subject of that scene, I thought there was a key sentiment expressed that gets glossed over in this movie:

He calls her song and production an embarrassment.

In the movie she is supposed to be some deep, poetic, lyricist who is so devoted to the art that she even rejects backup dancers when she gets her big break. I really thought the movie was going to explore how she soul searches after the SNL appearance and finds that Jack is correct that she sold out her art for pop fame. Instead she just continues down the soulless pop road without looking back without it ever being brought up again by any of the characters.

A writer could have very easily written a movie where Jack's relapse is due to his disappointment over the degradation of what he saw as beauty and truth sufficiently strong to restore his faith in the art. However, we know this is a chick flick because it was written as Jack's relapse and death is due to his jealousies over her fame.

^ agreed

That arc was unexplored and things continued to happen for no coherent reason whatsoever. Kinda feel like this is a a collection of scattered scenes that are moving but when strung together it lets you down.

Deconstructing Jackson

Cooper has explained that his country-rock singer is an amalgamation of influences. His character’s backstory is partially inspired by a line in Bruce Springsteen’s autobiography about how the rocker “took his father’s voice.” In an interview with Vanity Fair at the Toronto Film Festival, Cooper said that, growing up, he wanted to be his father. So he took the two sentiments and created a heartbreaking story line between Jackson and his much-older brother/father figure, played by Sam Elliott. Cooper was so set on Elliott co-starring in the film that the actor trained with a vocal coach to approximate Elliott’s cowboy twang before even approaching the actor. (Elliott was so touched by Cooper’s work that he agreed to the role.)

I saw Cooper also had Elliott to his house to pitch the flick and made him dinner.

I don’t think he relapsed—he just straight up committed suicide. The pills he popped were for the guts to go through with it. I think he also offed himself because he was hindering her career—he knew her concern for him was keeping her from touring Europe as planned.

That said, I can’t believe I’m debating the ending of this chick flick.

Okay, don't care what y'all think, but some of the songs on the soundtrack are dope. Always remember you this way might be better than shallow.

This movie is unbelievable, ridiculous, and terrible.

First, we're supposed to believe that Jack was loaded off his ass and Ally sang a couple lines of "Shallow" to him. Then he sends a plane to pick her up and calls her up on stage where they sing a duet version so polished it could win an Oscar.

The best unintended joke in the movie is when Sam Elliot's character accuses Jack of "stealing his voice." I laughed out loud since the normally high-pitched Bradley Cooper spends the entire movie talking like Sam Elliot.

Next your gonna tell me that Matt Damon didn't go to Mars in The Martian.

Another thing- why didn't Jack just turn on the engine of that nice muscle car while it was in the garage and kill himself like a human being instead of hanging himself like a savage?
