it's been a while since i watched it but i remember it being more unsettling than jump-scary. argento was a master of atmosphere.

it looks like this may have some of that spirit; but there are some images that look a little cliche.

what i'd really like to see (and nearly attempted to script myself) is a remake of "the tenant". it was a great premise that wasn't really executed well at all. i remember ebert giving it either 1 or 0 stars. it would also be very relevant these days of so much xenophobia.

I watched this over the weekend on Amazon Prime.

it's hard to really nail down how i feel about this remake. on the one hand, it preserves a lot of the elements that made the original such a masterpiece. then there are some things they invented for the remake (or "re-imagining?") that had some intrigue. but the payoffs don't really come together and feel all that satisfying.

ultimately, it becomes a real mess. there's this underlying theme of political turmoil that seems to serve a purpose...but it doesn't have much of an impact when so much of it relies on blood and gore in its final act.

the backdrop of 1970's split Germany and the Berlin Wall was interesting and sometimes i felt more interested in that story than the "suspiria" story.

the acting is very good, and i'm continually impressed with dakota johnson. she does like to be nude in movies...and that's ok by me.

i think the problem is that they really try to force too much together, and it just clangs rather than bonds. the soundtrack is excellent by thom yorke; but it doesn't have that same soul burning quality that the original did.

i appreciate that it tries to be its own movie and have its own theme, and i really wanted it to work for me. but ultimately it just fell apart and came off as trying too hard.

it's 2 and a half hours long...and by the end you definitely feel it.

:D :D out of :D :D :D :D
