Caught this last night, and it's the most fun I've had in a theater for quite some time. They certainly use the R rating well, and it does not shy away from the violence.

Obviously most of the media is talking about Hit-Girl, played by 13 yr old Chloe Moretz, and rightfully so. The shit that comes out of her mouth is something else, and she absolutely butchers people.

The theater I was in (Cinemark in Bloomingdale) was eating this film up. It's quite funny (Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Clarke Duke have their moments), but I was really surprised with the star, Aaron Johnson. Very likable dude. He's actually playing a young John Lennon in the upcoming film "Nowhere Boy".

It is a comic-book movie, so expect "over-the-top" shit, but it definitely works. Clocks in at a fast 2 hours. Highly recommend it, and girls will like it too.

Saw the R-rated trailer focusing on Hit Girl. I appreciated the shock value of the stuff that comes out of her mouth... and I even laughed the first time. Soon thereafter I felt really bad about it. I've clearly crossed over that line where I can enjoy stuff like that anymore. I guess it's the burden of having 3 daughters and a son. I'm not judging anyone who does, I just look at things from a different point of view than when I didn't have any kids. Maybe I'm just gettin' old.

At least now we know that apparently Roger Ebert is a board member.

Go read his review and you'll understand what I'm talking about. He gave the movie 1 star and pretty much didn't say a single thing bad about the actual movie, only that he found it morally repulsive because they have an 11 year old girl getting her ass kicked and also kicking ass. Someone forgot to tell Roger its a fucking comic book, not real life.

ebert's always had issues with this kind of thing. it doesn't surprise me. i remember him and siskel giving it to "robocop 2" for the same reason. a child (played by an older kid, but representing a 10 year old character) had a foul mouth and killed people, and both of them were turned off by it. ebert sounded very similar to his review of "kick ass". it was like he wanted to like it and wanted to review it fairly but couldn't get past that.

ebert's never really been a "cutting edge" movie goer, even though he co-wrote "beyond the valley of the dolls".

some of the movies he "hate, hate, hates" are pretty damn good.

Do u guys have kids? Life experiences affect the way you view/perceive the world and art. It's a subjective view, but I can totally understand where it's coming from.

I do not have kids yet, but I do respect your view. I can only imagine what it feels like to have kids and watch them grow, and I know your own life and perceptions change. My best friend is about to have his first in May, and I can already see some effects.

I think it's great that you can still appreciate the "idea" of this type of movie, but also realistically understand its effect. I don't even have kids but would be terrified if I did and they saw this movie. Like you said....very subjective.

I saw this yesterday, I enjoyed it because it was different then most moviefare nowadays. It had a really interesting story,but the violence was nasty. As far as the young lady in the movie, it was upsetting,but not as much as I would have been 10-15 years ago. All the crap onscreen nowadays makes me kind of numb to this.

Cool... sounds like you completely get where I'm coming from. I fully admit, I would've found this hilarious in my 20's.

great comic book movie. and i stress "comic book". was it over the line to use a kid? probably. did it work? yes. it's a fantastic yarn and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

i apologize to any parent of a guido criminal who was mercilessly murdered by a 13 year old kid. because i reveled in it.

extremely fun stuff. i hope there's a sequel.

I liked the reference to Jack Nicholson at the end. That was cool. Also,Nick Cage in costume using the Adam West BATMAN voice,strange & cool,too!

i agree, jimmy. probably my favorite thing about the movie...or at least, the funniest--was definitely the adam west voice. great stuff.

Just rented this tonight. Knew nothing about it other than a 1 minute trailer I saw a couple weeks ago on some other DVD, and it was a the PG trailer. Going in, I thought it was a "stupid" comedy like 'Superbad' or 'The Hangover'. The violence was crazy, and yes, 'Hit Girl' steals the movie.

Watched it with my wife with an 8 year old and 2 five year olds sleeping upstairs. I wasn't upset about an 11 year old doing what she did. IT'S A MOVIE!!! Kids pretend shooting each other and fighting each other every day. This girl was paid a decent amount to do it more realistically than most.

Finally saw this and loved it for the most part. Only three things bothered me abou the movie to different degrees. For one, in the book when he tells the girl that he isn't gay and is in fact Kickass she responds by punching him the face and throwing him out the window. That's a huge departure from the sell out way its handled in the movie. That bothered me a lot.

The second thing that bothered me was the casting of Nick Cage as Big Daddy. The book portays that character as a huge monster sized man which works so much better when paired up with the tiny little girl. Nick Cage did not pull this one off convincingly. They coudl've done a much better job casting that part.

The third thing is the little girl they got wasn't cute enough. In the movie she actually kinda looks tought, but in the book she looks like a little doll that couldn't possibly hurt anything let alone be an assassin. The girl in the movie did a wonderful job and stole the movie, but I would've liked to see the casting stay truer to the book if possible.

Overall, loved the movie, loved the music in it and they did a good job staying true to the book for the most part except for the glaring sell out job with the love interest.
