I was watching the Blues Brothers the other night, and was wondering if it was just a 'Chicago phenomenon, or if it was popular countrywide'.

And while looking, I benchmarked it against some of the flicks from the other 70s SNL cast, along with some John Candy flicks (Uncle Buck shocked me...)

Movie and Domestic Gross:

Animal House $ 141.6M
Stripes $85.3 M
Uncle Buck $ 66.8M
Blues Brothers $57.2M
Fletch $50.6
Planes, Trains and Automobiles $ 49.5M
Meatballs $43.0M
The Great Outdoors $41.5M
Caddyshack $39.8M
Slap Shot $28.0M

Adam Sandler Shitflicks that I've seen:
Grown-ups: $161.9M
The Longest Yard: $158.1
Click: $137.3M
Funny People: $51.9M

Fletch outgrossed Planes, Trains & Automobiles, Caddyshack and Slapshot?!

Guess I shouldn't confuse profits vs. quality.

By the way, Grown-ups was just awful, pure awful.

Agree on Grownups. Yet it's $161M domestic gross is pretty comparable to:

Fletch, Planes/Trains, Caddyshack and Slapshot combined ($168M)

I never understood why they never compared ticket sales vs. $$$ btw.

Movies back in the late 70s / early 80s were dirt cheap compared to nowadays.

Back in the 70's a ticket to the movies was $2.... now its $12.50. So go by individual tickets sold, and Sandler movies suck in comparison.

none of these movies are as good as Hot Shots 2 and Citizen Kane.

I can't believe that many people went to see grown ups. Are there any legit funny movies anymore? I can't really think of one this year. I haven't even seen it and I'm almost certain Jackass is the only remotely funny movie from this year and it isn't really a comedy. Get him to the Greek??? That's all we've got for this entire year?

I never see any numbers to show the number of actual tickets sold. It's always just sales in $$. Are these figures even available? I would be interested in seeing what is really at the top.

The last one I thought was great was Superbad. I liked The Hangover, just not as much as everyone else.

I don't think that I have watched a Sandler movie since his best effort, Punch Drunk Love. I tired of his schtick long ago.

I agree. I can't figure out why people rave about this movie.

Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore were pretty funny the first couple times you saw them.

Now they are just annoying.

Adam Sandler movies make a lot of money, regardless of how bad the critics really think of his film work.

In fact, Adam's got at least 2 new movies come 2011. He's one of the stars of "She's Not That Into You", a romantic comedy (yuck!) that features Jennifer Aniston, Nicole Kidman, Brooklyn Decker and his good friend, NBC Sports' Dan Patrick, that is scheduled to hit theaters on Valentine's Day next February. D.P. also has a small role in "Jack & Jill", another Sandler vehicle where he plays a guy who sees his sister around Thanksgiving and can't get her to leave. Sandler actually plays "Jack & Jill" in this flick that also stars Katie Holmes and is scheduled for a November '11 release.
