There's a lot of trash out there as far as remakes, but there are also some films that deserve to be remade, because they could have been better the 1st time around. I never thought that Orwell's 1984 was very good, even with John Hurt and Richard Burton. While a great actor, Richard Burton was not right for the part as O'Brien. Burton was mostly the good-guy or hero in his films, so I don't think this departure for him in taking on the sinister character of O'Brien worked. On the other hand, John Hurt is rather dull, that English dull that is fine in a BBC made for TV movie for an English audience but not for a feature film based on the Orwell story. If I were to cast those roles now, Daniel Day Lewis would make the best Winston or maybe even Eddie Redmayne, who was excellent in the Theory of Everything. As O'Brien, Jeremy Irons would be great, or if you really wanted to be daring, you could use Hugh Laurie. Ben Kingsley might also work, but he's getting to be a little too old now. He was excellent as the psychologist in Shutter Island. So yes, 1984 is a film definitely worth remaking. It would be a sensation, if they got the casting right. Have Tarantino direct it. By the way, I was too hard on him in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. It's a good film after all.

For the female lead of Julia in 1984, I would use Felicity Jones. She would be perfect.

I don't know about remakes but Mario Puzo's novel Fools Die cries out to be made into a movie. I'm not sure why it never has been.

Interesting choices. One guy is 20+ years older than the other, but Day-Lewis is an amazing actor and could pull it off. Hurt is very understated. Not everyone's cup of tea. I've only seen Eddie Redmayne in two films (I never see any movies), but he's a talent, too--and this is coming from someone who thinks most actors are interchangeable.

1984 could go many directions. Could even be a comedy.

Lots of smoking in that dystopia.

George C. Scott would have made a good O'Brien in the 1984 version.

When St. Bede's (my neighborhood) got cable in 1986, this was the second movie I watched. Whoa!! It wasn't an experience I have ever forgotten. It twisted my guts--in terms of empathy and anxiety--but it was also hilarious and scary.

The first movie was Maximum Overdrive. I told my sister that the only reason the main actor got the job was because he looked like the guy from Apocalypse Now. I also thought the chick was pretty hot. But when I got done watching, I was like, that movie kind of sucked.

Agree on the Big Trouble... assessment. I cannot see how anything could be better than it's original iteration.

For no apparent reason, it just occurred to me that I'm somewhat surprised that someone hasn't tried to defile either the first or Christmas National Lampoon movies yet. At least, as far as I know anyway. I'm not exactly Mr. Movie.
