Hey, I was there too! The lawn/parking lot scene was like the movie Dazed and Confused for a young Furious.

They still put on a really great show. Zander’s voice has aged so well and they pull out some deep cuts when they aren’t the opening act.

It was Fourth of July, wasn't it? '79 or '80? Right around when we first got driver's licenses. I know Dahl and Teenage Radiation played. Black Sabbath maybe?

How was the show grandpa?

Yes sir. Fourth of July, '79. Dahl, AC/DC (with Bon Scott), The Babys, Molly Hatchet, and Cheap Trick.

The Babys were booed off the stage after a few songs and a hail of whiskey bottles.

Sabbath played there with Blue Oyster Cult, but I didn’t see that one.

Oh yeah! It was AC/DC. I would have never admitted I liked the Babys back then. Midnight Rendezvous!

I may have been getting confused with one of the Speedway Jams where Sabbath played. I think Molly Hatchet might have played on every bill.

That's right, Sabbath/BOC was at the Speedway. The Babys’ Anthology still gets regular play from me: Everytime I Think of You, Turn and Walk Away, Back On My Feet Again, Head First, Isn’t It Time – those tunes are all right.

I would have paid over face value from Mike Damone to see The Babys.

One of the best rhythm sections in rock, and they boast 3 of my personal favorite drummers (Grohl, William Goldstein from SDRE, and Taylor Hawkins)

In other words, competent.

Thought you might get a kick out of some of the punk references to Chicago and old pictures.

Yeah, that part was great. But it kind of felt the same as the Studio City documentary where I lost interest at the end when Grohl started playing.

You know, Pezzati and Albini and Santiago Durango and the Effigies are a little bit older than I am. And the guys that played in the next wave of bands, well, I would have been one of the older guys in that group. There was a definite divide in the "scenes". Raygun and the Effigies were playing bars. Vic Bondi and Articles of Faith were kind of the de facto leaders of the younger guys.

Vic put together all ages shows at a place on Broadway and Irving called the Centro American Social Club. They started to get all the touring bands that hit Chicago to play those shows. The Articles of Faith guys lived in a big blue house on Seminary that everyone called "Big Blue". The out of town guys would usually stay there.

For some reason there was a beef between Vic and the Effigies. And the scene kind of split right there. Raygun may have bridged that gap. As you saw in the show, they played all ages shows at the Cubby Bear. Those shows were surreal. You had these oddly dressed, strangely coiffed, very young high school kids walking in there and all these old drunks looking at them like "What the fuck???" When I see pictures of bands like Negative Element or Rights of the Accused they look like babies. Let alone Narducy's group with Grohl's cousin Tracy who actually were babies. One of the funniest things in the You Weren't There documentary is when they show John Kezdy from the Effigies, an old guy now, and he starts slagging Rights of the Accused and the other younger bands and then it cuts to Mike O'Connell from Rights and he says something like, "Dude, you're still angry? You're a fucking lawyer and I'm a bartender. You won, okay?"

Back to Die Kreuzen, which was a band I loved. Those guys didn't really fit into the scene. They were from Milwaukee, but they played Chicago a lot. They didn't dress in any "punk rock" way. They looked like the regular stoners I went to high school with at Gordon Tech. But in those early days there was no uniform. You could get away with just being who you were.

My band at the time, the Maggots had a song about Die Kreuzen called "Frat Party Bash". It was based around the guitar lick from "All Along The Watchtower" or the Velvet Underground's "Rock and Roll" which, when you break it all down, are pretty similar. Of course we played the riff super fast. I can't remember all the lyrics but it was a true story about my friends and I hanging out on the Northwestern campus. We saw a flyer for a frat party that listed entertainment by Die Kreuzen. We couldn't believe it. What the fuck was this punk band doing playing a fraternity at NU? Getting paid, I guess. Anyway, we talked our way into the party and we were about the only guys there digging Die Kreuzen. They weren't exactly a frat boy band. We ended up shooting pool with them in the basement of the house. They were good pool players. I still remember the first line of the song:

We were walking through Norris
We saw a sign
All the boys headed to Theta Xi.

Has anyone else been keeping up with this show? I caught the shows highlighting Washington D.C.
and Nashville. I am not a Foo Fighters fan and probably couldn't even give you the name of 3 of
their songs from their entire catalog but am enjoying this program. It has been an interesting look
at the music scenes in each respective city. The program has been well done and kind of wish other
bands would show how their records come together.

You'd be wise to invest some time on FF on YouTube or Spotify.
And if you like the show, you should check out Back And Forth, and Sound City.
I watched the D.C./Virginia episode last night, and just dl'd the Nashville ep. (I don't have HBO)

Foo Fighters are awesome, don't let anyone tell ya different.
:D

Can you suggest an album or two of theirs? I really don't think they are going to be my cup of tea
but I could at least give one or two of their discs a spin so I am not a hypocrite.

Their first two albums are SOLID. They kind of taper off after that. Their 4th album isn't too bad, but I definitely lost interest in the rest of their catalog.

Yeah, the first 2 records are pretty much 95% killer, 5% filler.
When I heard about the Wrigley Field show, I started to make
a FF playlist that I thought would best be conveyed in an outdoor stadium.
this is as far as I got, so far, I haven't heard the whole new album, and I know
I've left some songs out, but again, I'm not done yet.

In Your Honor
Wind Up
Low
Enough Space
I'll Stick Around
All My Life
My Hero
Times Like These
White Limo
The Pretender

Acoustic B-Stage
Big Me
Walking After You
Next Year

Full band returns to A-Stage
This Is A Call
One By One
Long Road To Ruin
Rope

Encore
Monkey Wrench
Learn To Fly
Best Of You

Honorable mention for the song Stacked Actors from There's Nothing Left to Lose. I'm not a bigfan of the album, but that's probably my favorite FF song of all time.

G damnit, I've got Ff on iTunes shuffle and there are a bunch of songs I've overlooked.
I'll work up another playlist.
Yeoman's work, I tell ya.

Just listened to a lossless version of the full Sonic Highways record.
I'm not backtracking on any of my previous statements on the band,
but HOLY FUCKING SHIT - WHAT A FUCKING BORING ASS SNOOZEFEST.

Maybe I'll change my mind after repeated listenings, but I'm honestly non-plussed.
And I'm a little pissed.
And a little drunk.
Just fucking generic.
Taylor's drums sound neutered.
Vocal melodies are fine, I guess.
The best song is I Am A River.
Seems to me the effort put into recording, travel, 8 studios/cities, was pointless.
Sounds like it was all recorded in a week in one location.

Caught the last episode about Austin, TX and it was the least interesting of the bunch in my opinion.
I never realized how long Austin City Limits had been on television. It was something new to me a
few years back. I bet they have an incredible library of performances.
