I know there was a lot of hype going into this one but I thought it showed some promise last night. Multiple storylines about the characters and
then they all meet up at the end regarding this case. I have no idea how the different departments they work for will try to work together or
undermine one another during the investigation.

so glad the reviews for this show are bad. There isn't a show out there that deserves to fall flat on its face more than this.

I didn't read any all and out bad reviews. There was quite a bit of disappointment in the premiere but most reviewers admitted the expectations
were likely too high. Since a majority of the reviewers have watched through episode 3 a majority mention that the pace picks up and the show
has some promise. I am not willing to give up on the season based on one episode.

It was worth watching just to see Farrell say, "You ever bully or hurt anyone again, I'll buttfuck your dad right here on this lawn with your mom's headless corpse."

I agree it sucked. But I like reading the reviews because they put it in better words as to why it sucked. This USA today guy nailed it I thought.

http://entertainthis.usatoday.com/2015/06/21/true-detective-season-2-episode-1-recap-the-western-book-of-the-dead/

I just don't like these characters where as I immediately like Woody and McConeghy in their first episode. Big Fan made a good point. Every god damn conversation can't be with this stupid "life or death" looks on their faces like they are doing.

Season 1 was fantastic.. Why are you rooting for a shitty season 2 ? I've got my doubts about Vaughn and McAdams ..but the writing should be there ...I'm Gona watch 2 nite ..huge shoes to fill , but could still be very good .

Vaughn can't be a serious actor. I think he looks dumb doing so. You can tell he's really trying hard to make this the stepping stone to be just that. He's just good for the stupid comedies. He'll go back to that as this will be a failure.

McAdams is now in her mid 30s so she's trying get away from being eye candy in movies cuz she no longer will be. But she's not pulling it off either.

It's bad writing, bad casting and bad acting.

But I'm gonna hate watch this son of a bitch!!!!!

Vaughn was the best part of that episode.

Farrell was next and then a tie with McAdams and Kitsch.

And I like Riggins. The reviews hailing McAdams have seen episodes that I haven't. She was awful.

Kitsch seems like an odd choice for this role. There is something I don't like about his face. McAdams was
alright but like she was over acting and trying to be too much of a bad ass. Probably because I haven't seen
her in a role like that. I'd agree with Vaughn being decent and Farrell was almost a bit too crazy right off
the bat. I hope to rewatch it tonight and see if I can catch any little clues or tidbits.

It was overbearingly brooding and heavy-handed (the opening of the bar scene toward the end was LOL bad). It did nothing to hook me in, and I care zero for any of the characters or the story they are setting up. I'll give it one more episode, but I doubt I'll go much further.

It was alright. Heavy-Handed to say the least and kind of exhausting to watch. Every scene for every actor feels like maximum effort to be super acty and important. My brain is done after focusing on this show for an hour. I'll likely stick with it because it's easy to carve out an hour once a week, but expectations are low.

The Brink? That could be a thing.

One word.

PROTAGONIST

This show needs to get one.

I simply can't get into a show, no matter how good the story is or how well acted it may be, when I despise every lead character. Last year both leads had major faults but they had redeeming qualities that made you connect with them. This year all four of the leads are a mish-mash of alcoholic, addictive personality, mind fucked pieces of shit. It's as if the writers were trying to see which character they could make the most detestable out of the group.

I'll give it another episode but if this continues to be douchebags on parade I will find better things to do with my time on Sunday nights.

Haven't watched yet. Did they provide lots of clues in the scenery that ultimately lead to nothing?

agreed with you and streetdoc, it's really saturated in depressing atmosphere. but not in a hypnotic way, in just a boring way. forget about the first season, if this wasn't called "true detective" no one would be saying they'd watch another episode nor would i think many would've gotten past the first 15 minutes.

i don't know how much i even care about the case itself or the stakes involved.

I didn't find the Season 2 premiere any more ponderous, heavy-handed, brooding, preposterous or pretentious than most of Season 1.

The writing is basically the same as it ever was.

The only difference is that people are still pissed about the way Season 1 ended--and they're disappointed that Harrelson and McConaughey aren't the leads this time around.

Most of the negative reviews of Season 2 are a backlash against Season 1.

Did Colin Farrell get shot by Larry Horse last night?

*SPOILER ALERT*

If that fucker is dead it's one of the boldest moves in TV history. If he's miraculously alive I'll dislike this season more than last.

I'm enjoying this season, I enjoyed season 1 for the dialogue, atmosphere and such.....bu season 2 seems to have a bit more depth to it.

Ep 2 eased my fears after a year slog that was ep 1.

Do you know this for sure?

There is no way a guy comes back from a point blank shotgun blast to the abdomen in time to solve this case. The only way he could recuperate is for them to fast forward to a cold case, like they did in the first season.

I watched both episodes last night. I don't know what everyone is complaining about. I didn't find it remarkably bad. I thought it was no worse than average. The ultimate story line doesn't really interest me. Also, Vaughn doesn't have the gravitas to play the role of abused kid turned organized crime boss turned soul looking for redemption.

I like that redhead in this role. She always seems to be appropriately cast as an aging, damaged woman.

Rachel Mc Adams is looking dumpy in those jeans. She had a great can in some movie I saw her in a couple of years ago. It now looks like it is sagging.

My guess is he was shot with something non-lethal like rock salt or something and it will play out like a cheap cliffhanger trick.

I find the dialogue really taking me out of the show at times, not in a good way. I've read a lot of discussion on Vaughn can't say the lines. I think he's been alright although his monologue at the beginning about his father wasn't a great effort. But, there are quite a few actors struggling with this writing, I think. The mayor talking about kids was another one for me.

My guess is this all has something to do with the Bohemian Grove.
