Z's just doing shot glasses of the hater-ade. I thought it was a relatively good episode, relative to my modified expectations. For not dealing with any of the "main" characters, it was pretty strong.

I don't think it answered all the questions that jimmy thought it did, especially regarding the Candidates but I assume that answer is still coming.

The spine of the episode, regarding the "light", is very MacGuffin-ish. I wonder if they plan to actually explain what they are talking about. I think not.

But, overall, I thought it was the greatest episode of episodic television ever made or even considered. How do you like that, person in Wheaton?

they can't even cover up their own continuity errors. the two bodies weren't discovered side by side at first. they were shown side by side in this past season, but not in the first season.

and it's funny that the writers say this isn't "about god" or anything, yet what is the light in the tunnel supposed to represent? "life, death, everything". so...god then.

but one thing that i think may have been explained is why jacob can leave the island (as he did when he rounded up the "candidates"?) and why MIB can't (because he's a part of the island as the smoke?).

and where's their parallel dimension at?

It isn't like LOST invented ret-conning .... jeebus, are we really going to get worked-up over the orientation of skeletons 6 years ago?

The episode was excellent because it concentrated on one adverb: how. No why's, no when's, just how. Fine.

The only question I would ask is if Jacob's brother wanted off the island, but he's dead, is it just sheer coincidence that smokey also happened to want off the island? Or did smokey lose his shit after Jacob's brother was tossed into golden pond and then subsequently want to leave because it was on Jacob's brother's mind.

The man in black couldn't have been killed by Jacob, because their (fake) mom explicitly said that she made it so that they couldn't hurt each other. So, man in black must still be "alive" in a sense; the smoke monster must still be his essence. The fake mom even said that going into that light is "worse than death". So, I think the MIB is still the MIB.

But, why is he "evil incarnate"? He was just a boy. Why wasn't he allowed to leave the island - then or now? And what is/was keeping him there? How does Jacob's mere presence - and now the "candidates" mere presence, keep him jailed on the island?

And what made him the judge, jury, and executioner that the smoke monster used to be in the earlier seasons? That doesn't make sense anymore. Remember, he judged Mr. Eko and tossed him around like a rag doll until he died. Ben went before him to be judged. But, he's just a guy who wants to leave the island...

And on that note, we learn that Jacob too is mortal. No special powers, except that he doesn't age. So how does he "bring" people to the island? How can he appear in people's lives off the island and influence them. How can he leave the island? Especially since the only reason the smoke monster can't leave the island is because Jacob is there.

And now that we know Jacob and MIB aren't engaged in some kind of game, then what are all these rules, and why would MIB submit himself to such rules (i.e. why can't he simply kill the candidates)?

See, it's not so much that we aren't getting answers. We're getting answers that completely contradict everything that had happened previously.

I'm still hoping for a great finale, but at this point I just don't see how the overall story can be rescued.

Are we at least all agreed that Jack's the "winning" candidate?

the dutiful son (shepherd) vs. the rebel? the rebel committing the sin of killing his "mother"? becoming the "black sheep"? then it reverses the story by the dutiful son killing his own brother, the rebel.

i guess i should have said "cain and abel type" story. but it's still hokey and predictable.

One reason the last episode was good was that it reaffirmed my long standing belief that neither Jacob nor the MIB is evil. They're just dudes...

except, using innocent people to fulfill their dreams of finding out what the lake is all about, or getting off the island. yeah, that's just what regular dudes do.

That's not entirely what I meant, but....whatever...

By just "dudes" I am saying there is not this grand Good vs. Evil thing we were lead to believe. Both have good and bad qualities, just like a regular person. They are both completely selfish. Jacob is no better than the MIB as we have seen in some of the flashbacks...

well yes they've played with this before; jacob was first introduced as sort of a villain it seemed, or a manifestation of a Harvey-like imaginary friend for Ben--who was also introduced as a villain.

The black smoke, however, has killed *far* more innocent people than Jacob has on his hands. And all of it is to satisfy a selfish need of "getting off the island".

Both were revealed as just "two confused little boys" but they're still responsible for all the mayhem and problems for our beloved main characters.

never go to any island, ever, in the south pacific.

So not only is Desmond a time traveler but also jumps into alternative universes? And it looks like Hugo knows what's up too

The same way Charlotte and Dr. Chang are. Alternate world. Anything can happen. Doesn't have to make sense.

Geez, ask LoHo to lend you a comic book. :D

i'll tell you why they did it: to inspire another "Oh!" moment for the audience. instead it induced more of an eye roll.

also, the end of this absolutely has to make sense. this isn't a comic book.

I admit i treated it as such up until the episode where Hugo fixes a van and goes cruisin'. Since then I treat it for what it should be, escapist fun. And I enjoy it much more.

Answers from "What They Died For"

-Widmore's motivations for returning
-Why Kate's name was crossed off the list
-Why the LOSTies were chosen by Jacob
-What the Man in Black's real intentions are
-The Summoning Room, as a manipulation tactic against Ben
-The purpose of Desmond in relation to the Candidates
-Purpose of Young Jacob and the ashes

Not a bad episode for setting up the finale. Loved the reveal that it was MIB "summoning" Ben the entire time. Makes the rewatching of all those cabin scenes more interesting, thinking that it was MIB who was really manipulating Ben and acting like "Jacob" to him all along.

Loved Ben's "supposed" evil turn. Still think he is playing and will ultimately do something heroic. However, if not, I'm ok with him being evil Ben. That is when I like him the most.

Juliet has got to be Jack's wife in the Alt-verse.

So they are all going to be coming together at a concert? David's recital or DRIVESHAFT?
