No, it's not. There's two separate issues here. The portion you quote earlier, and the Testimonium. He's right that the Testimonium is almost universally rejected. It literally makes no sense being there.

As for the bit in Antiquities, "the brother of Jesus, who was called Christ, whose name was James," stop and consider: if Josephus is actually referencing the Jesus Christ here, then he's certainly aware of him, and presumably, his followers. Yet this is the only time he mentions it, ever. Really? That makes sense? A supposed miracle worker starts a new religion in region Josephus wrote about extensively, and yet he only mentions him one time, in passing?

Sorry, that simply strains credulity.

It makes sense if you understand Josephus's background. It is exactly the kind of mention he would use, and it shows that Christians didn't "get to" and re-arrange his writing to shoehorn in Jesus. Otherwise, if they were putting something in, wouldn't they make it agree with their own biblical account? Josephus's account is understood by a majority to refer to Jesus of Nazareth, who claimed to be the song of God.

In context, it's pretty clear he's not. And I don't see how it makes any sense, given Josephus' background. He literally devoted years of his life to becoming intimately familiar with the various extant forms of Judaism in the area, yet somehow, he completely fails to mention a new and rapidly growing sect based on a supposed messiah?

I think his background is exactly what made him marginalize Jesus. Read up on Josephus and it should make sense.

No, my mom was upfront with us because she didn't believe in lying to her kids about a fictional character.

This is like the bottom of the coffee cup that Chaz Palmentari catches in the Usual Suspects. All of Mini Ditka's threads make sense to me now. We are IN the Matrix.

Hmm, then it's pretty interesting how he want's to marginalize Jesus, yet mentions him for no apparent reason, no?

I happened to catch the episode that includes Jesus' birth on TV last night, caught maybe the last 50 minutes.
Intrigued enough to DVR the next episode showing Jesus performing miracles and such. Got me to thinking,
and maybe I will learn this in Hank's bible reading thread, but do they kind of glaze over Jesus growing up?
I know of when he was born and when he is a young man and that is it.

I think he spent his summers on a kibbutz making wine.

Great last episode. Although I prefer Passion of the Christ for that part the rest of the episode was top shelf. The casting of Paul was inspired. Peter Stomare is one of the best underated actors in the last 20 years. Dude nails it in everything I have ever seen him in especially 8mm

Really? I thought it was interesting.I am kinda into The apostles. The one thing they really did not touch on was the infighting between Paul and James the Brother of Jesus. It was the real reason for Pauls journeys. They basically could not stand his thoughts on what they wanted to do. SO they kicked his ass out of Jerusalem. I been wanting to read some of the "banned" Books,I have read the Gospel of Thomas. I want to read the rest of the Gnostic stuff. They had a very interesting view of Christianity. Acts of Peter and Acts of Paul are on my short list.
