I think I juuust missed SpongeBob. By then I was mainlining Comedy Central and thought I was too old for Nickelodeon. Good time to do so! It's frustrating how few people remember Strangers with Candy and Upright Citizens Brigade.
But yeah, the vibe I always got from SpongeBob was that the suits figured out how to remake Ren & Stimpy without it being alienating or under the control of a high-maintenance sex pest. And sure enough, Ren & Stimpy was a big hit for Nick but SpongeBob has been a super-mega-uber-ultra hit.
