Carrol O'Connor was a great actor but was the show meaner to liberals??? Meathead was a bum.

Jimmy, I thought Rob Reiner's character "Mike 'Meathead' Stivic" was a Conservative...

No SHARK he wasnt

He was a liberal. He had a buddy who dodged the draft that let to one of the best quotes ever

"Yous cant pick and choose if you wanna go to War, youd never get a decent war off the ground that way!!"

Archie Bunker always seemed to want no part of what Meathead was trying to say politically or socially for that matter...I was awfully young when "All in the Family" first aired...

One of my favorite scenes in TV history. When George Jefferson meets Tom Willis (the first actor):

Bunker: "Hey Jefferson, you're going to love this!"

Lionel: "Ma, Pa, this is Jenny's parent's Mr. and Mrs. Willis."

Willis: "Mr. Jefferson. Mrs. Jefferson."

Jefferson: "You're White!"

Willis: "And you're Black."

Bunker: "It's a kick in the head isn't it."

. . .

Jefferson: "Think, son, think. What about your children? What are they going to be?"

Lionel: "Boys and girls I hope!"

And what a toast to end it all: "Jefferson, here's to yesterday"

F-ing priceless. Thanks NSJ, I'd never seen that one

"Archie" & Mike Royko taught me virtually every racial/ethnic slur I know.
I found this quote and could not help thinking of how Royko viewed Richard J. Daley...Mayor. Archie Bunker in New York was eerily similar to Richard J. in Bridgeport.

Archie Bunker: That ain't the American Way, buddy. No, siree. Listen here, professor. You're the one who need an American History lesson. You don't know nothin' about Lady Liberty standin' there in the harbor, with her torch on high screamin' out to all the nations in the world: "Send me your poor, your deadbeats, your filthy." And all the nations send 'em in here, they come swarming in like ants. Your Spanish P.R.'s from the Caribboin, your Japs, your Chinamen, your Krauts and your Hebes and your English fags. All of 'em come in here and they're all free to live in their own separate sections where they feel safe. And they'll bust your head if you go in there. *That's* what makes America great, buddy.
[exits Stivic house]
Mike Stivic: [to Gloria] I think we just heard Archie Bunker's Bicentennial Minute.

Royko had a column where he described the city. Starting around Taylor St. "one" had to look out for the Wops, the Bohunks(still my favorite), then the Chinks, then the Wops, the N@ggers("because who knew WHAT they would do  ), then the Micks then the Pollacks, then to safety with people who were "just like me"

Of course Royko on Haggis, chitlins' or czarina...equally riveting. :eye:

"All in the Family" was ahead of its time when it first debuted in 1971, and covered many important social topics during its run until it left the air in 1979. My mom, who sadly passed away a couple years ago, was a big fan of this classic series and never missed a rerun.
I always thought it was perfect for the time. Bagels description was great. What really made the show was that setting was the majority of homes in America. Some aspect of each show was being played out in every home whether we wanted to admit it or not. Viewers were forced to look at themselves in a way they understood, but were being forced to admit wasn't fair or right or acceptable. It was masterfully crafted with incredible acting. Love it or hate it you were affected, and had serious thoughts about the show's premise by the time the piano player wrapped up the final credits. Dare I say some families had to "discuss" with one another what they thought about it. When was the last time we "discussed" any serious issue that came out of a weekly sitcom.
