That would be terrible but pretty pc commonplace to try to use a woman.

Chris Hardwick would be a good choice if you're trying to expand beyond the geriatric demographic that these late night shows currently have.

Hardwick's current show, @midnight, takes over twitter every weeknight while it's on; and he's done the celebrity interview thing with Talking Dead/Bad and hosting silliness with Singled Out.

Some chatter about CBS possibly going to a single 90 minute show rather than two 1 hour shows. Doubt Ferguson gets a shot at that, but Stewart or Colbert could be the choice there.

Carson, I guess, used to do 90 minute shows, and smoke cigarettes on the air throughout? Dunno.

Jay Leno's the easy money-maker who will give you ratings as long as his audience is still alive.

Not only smoke but if you look at clips from the 60s and early 70s they used to be drinking on air.

For a few shows CBS tried to do a Steve and Garry late night show. Dahl wanted it to be like a classic playboy after dark. Drink in hand and Dean Martinish poolside thing. This were the days.

Talk shows were better back then. Everything now is grabassy fluff and self-promotion. None of these networks would ever dare do something like the old Dick Cavett show. You know, where you actually got to see these people were human beings and not marketed commodities.

Besides me and perhaps you, who in the hell would watch the Dick Cavett Show redux (or Tom Snyder's old show for that matter)?

That said, Fallon seems to actually be doing something different and even I can't curmudgeonly dismiss it out of hand. Frankly, to this point my only strong complaint is that abortion of a theme song ... I mean, Christ Almighty, that piece of shit is the best we could get out of The Roots? REALLY?!?!?

What's sad is Craig can't be seriously considered to replace Dave because Craig's entire premise is based on being (a) the unknown underdog, and (b) lampooning the talkshow format that he would have to then conform to. Doesn't mean he's still not the best thing on TV pound for pound; it just means nobody's going to get fooled again after the Conan debacle.

I remember his morning show. #waybackmachine

Anyone else question the length of timing on these (handler - letterman) announcements? #ratingsandmoneygrab

If Joan Rivers didn't fuck it up and go to Fox for her own show we could have been spared Leno, but Carson held a grudge. I know it's a joke to think about her hosting the Tonight Show nowadays, but she was incredible when she filled in for Carson back then.

Watch some Youtube clips - just hilarious.

He is doing awesome work on the TBS show. His timing is honed like a surgical instrument.

He would be the perfect successor to Dave - TWO TIMES! TWO TIMES!

I can see Dave setting that up, too.

I watch Conan almost every morning Tues-Fri before work. He has been consistently very good at TBS.
He was probably a bit better earlier in his career but it is hard to come up with good stuff for 20 years.
I am not sure I see him getting the Late Show job but I'd follow him there if he did.

I was reading that this morning. I guess Fallon is really smoking Dave. Also, he is down in the key demo like 17% over last year or something. Besides Dave is 67. Go spend your money.

What kind of chump wastes their late night TV watching on these shows with all the offerings that are out there now?

You are right. I literally have not watched a late night network show like these in 4 years? More?
