I’m not avoiding the discussion because I’m not willing to exchange opinions. That’s not the issue.

There is no discussion to be had, really. Because the premises upon which you are basing your point of view allows for no discussion.

You think there are definitive parameters regarding what art SHOULD be. I don’t.

You think there are ideas an artist SHOULDN’T be allowed to have. I don’t.

This isn’t really about this particular show. I watched the first 8 episodes. I enjoyed parts, was bored by other parts, and thought the story telling method was ambitious but messy. The racial themes were obvious but didn’t impact me one way or another on a personal level. When I consume art, I don’t try to reconcile the message, or possible interpretations, with my core beliefs. I’ve never been angry or threatened by a piece of art. If that’s how some feel, that’s fine. It’s not my experience, however.

But all that is secondary to the larger issues I mentioned earlier: the idea that art SHOULD transcend race, to me, is just non-sense. Says who? And why?

Do you think that quote is a bad thing to do? The show told a story I don't often see. I can't remember a time I watched a movie or TV show in which the majority of the players were black. This fact doesn't automatically make the story that is being told better or more virtuous, but it offers up something new.

ok that sucked tonight.

nothing much to do w/ the main story except like 15 min of the show.

I guess Fetish's was the theme tonight - not sure why.

hope it gets back on track next week.

Were you responding to episode 5 here?

I thought that was one of the better episodes.

I don’t really care what race the actors are. I care about the story and plot.

If anyone is concentrating on the race of characters in this series you’re missing the story.

Watched episode 1 last night. I thought it was fantastic. It oozes Jordan Peele and JJ Abrams. Jurnee Smollett doesn't hurt either.

The race of the characters drive the story of the plot. It’s pretty difficult to not “concentrate” on the characters race and appreciate the plot.

Racial dynamics, how characters deal with how racial dynamics affect them is the shows primary theme, dude.

There is entertainment media that doesn’t focus on race dynamics as a primary theme, but this show is the opposite of that.

And I was entertained throughout the season.

Correct. A show can revolve around, or rely heavily on, racial dynamics without coming across as force feeding you how you should feel about it. This did that effectively.

My critiques if the show have nothing to do with the racial themes.

Also, if a viewer gets offended or feels threatened mererky by the presence of race as a theme, then this show is most definitely not for them.

I had missed this earlier. The entire post is embarrassingly stupid, but you passed the point of shameful ignorance awhile ago. I have to especially laugh at how pathetic the entire when was the last time there was an all black cast? Like this is some groundbreaking move, and it hasn't been happening regularly since the 70s at least. I mean where can black people go for exclusively black casts other than BET? I mean Tyler Perry, Jordan Peele, Spike Lee, John Singleton, Ryan Coogler never make anything for an audience seeking that.

But you never see all black casts I mean there was not the Jeffersons or the Cosby show 40 years ago or anything. It's just so new and refreshing. It's not some overplayed Black-ish gimmick. I mean you never see comedians like Chris Rock, Bernie Mac, Steve Harvey, or Jamie Foxx get their own shows. It's just such a lack of diversity. I can't remember a time when movies like Black Panther, Moonlight or Straight Outta Compton were popular let alone given critical acclaim.

And yes this racial grievance bullshit is an existential threat to our society. I don't know if you noticed mass rioting this summer brought on by lies, but that's about the tip of the iceberg of the problems this woke trash is causing in scholarship, social harmony and in avoiding the actual problems plaguing our society.

Alternative history where the Confederacy wins the Civil War? Unacceptable. Boycott. Protest. Alternative history where the Civil War leads to the New Negro Republic? It's their artistic vision.

this show...was not good. it strayed inexplicably from the source material which told an extremely straight-forward story that actually beat "watchmen" (the show) to the punch on tulsa. the fact that the hack damon flippin' lindelof gets credit for that turns my stomach.

i was disappointed in jordan peele for lending his name to this abysmal adaptation. caleb braithwhite was a great villain in the book and changing it to a woman made no sense. no "sons of adam" cult would've kept a woman alive to preserve their legacy. no matter what. what misogynistic cult would ever allow that? it was such a focus grouped decision...just weak. typical network limpwristed sell out writing.

the person to have given this project to should have been guillermo del toro. he was a lifelong lovecraft fan, wanted to adapt "at the mountains of madness" for years, and the book captured lovecraft's style perfectly. sci-fi gothic basically. his films like "pan's labyrinth" and "cronos" had more of that spirit than this show, which was rife with cliches (even summoning "the conjuring" ripoffs) and strained character development. the acting was great, but the characters were thin.

misha green will definitely get more work, but she obviously has no idea or doesn't care to write a sci-fi horror story in this style.

if she wants to do revisionist history, she could go with steven barnes' "lion's blood". at least then she doesn't have to work in the shadow of a "white supremacist".

I get this is old, but you are aware that race was a major part of the plot of this story right? I mean it wasn't just wedged in to the show it was a central plot point. It's kinda like how Mississippi Burning would have been better without those black actors, or perhaps if they just cast Al Jolson.

Agreed it strayed a lot from the source material a ton and it didn't make a lot of sense, except that they were looking to make it more visually provocative scenes? Not sure. It got too campy. Del Toro would have been awesome. I will say Jonathan Majors was great in this though. Michael Williams passing is sad though damn Imma mis O'mar Little
