Guy at work told me about this new show. It's Alex Rodriguez and his company going out and helping former athletes that have gone broke.

Episode one was former NBA first round pick Joe Smith. Guy made $61 million during his NBA career but now only has $2000 left in the bank.

Very interesting show. I think if you're a sports fan you'll like it. I don't want to give the first episode away but man, these athletes are so dumb and pampered even after they've gone broke.

SPOILERS.......

So in the first half of the episode, Arod lays out a financial plan for Joe Smith. He said he'll be back 2 weeks later to see how he's doing. Arod comes back 2 weeks later and finds out those 2 weeks Joe Smith hasn't shown up for his job!

Arod is pissed. He asks Joe why he wans't at work for the last 2 weeks. Joe says his car broke down and in the shop. Arod is going to lose it. He's like have you heard of Uber or a bike or a taxi....LOL. Regular people car breaks down you find a way to go to work, not miss 2 weeks. Regular people miss 2 weeks and they're fired.

You'd think if the dude is close to broke, he'd have like the utmost urgency to make it. Not this dipshit.

--

I'd like to see who is the next athlete in the next episode. I'll watch this one closely.

Great call. I forgot to mention that show on here. I thought it was as interesting as anything I've watched on TV the last few years. I never knew A-Rod was that bright but he seems like a solid guy. It was a great episode. Hopefully, they are all that good.

Probably won't watch this but damn that is interesting to see how a player blows that much money.

Interesting idea, I'll look for it. Doesn't Joe Smith get a decent monthly check from the NBA pension?

This show could be limitless with all the bankrupt NFL and NBA players.

Good question. I know it didn’t help sending his daughter to private school. That’s $50,000 right there.

I don't know why these guys don't move back to their colleges and get a job as an ambassador or even some administrative job at the pro teams they played for.

https://www.investopedia.com/financial-edge/0710/top-pro-athlete-pension-plans.aspx

Quote:
NBA players have one of the most generous pension plans in all of professional sports. They are vested into their pension plans after playing at least three seasons in the league. The minimum benefit for a player that retires at the age of 62 is $56,988 per year - not a bad retirement for a three-year career. The maximum benefit for any player is $195,000, and it takes 11 years of NBA service to qualify for this benefit.

But that's not all! NBA players are also eligible to participate in a league-sponsored 401(k). Do you think your 401(k) plan is good with a 50% matching policy? The NBA matches player's contributions up to 140%.

It sounds like they are not eligible to collect that pension until age 62, but I'm not exactly an expert in these types of things. Maybe the player can begin collecting their pension earlier, but at a lower amount?

Either way, Joe Smith would qualify for the max. I think he played at least 15 seasons in the league.

I think that MLB is the best at being able to place former players into organizational jobs. I think part of that is the entire minor league system, including all the foreign-born players and the stuff like the DR academies.

The Cubs seem to like to find jobs for career minor leaguers/4A players who demonstrated the tenacity to do it for over a decade. But these are guys who have proven that they're not fuck-ups.

If I remember correctly arod showed he was getting some kind of income from the nba but it wasn’t much. Plus most of it was going to alimony and child support.

But the dude is still living in a mansion he no longer can afford and still driving a high end car.

I won’t give away the ending of the episode but I’m not sure t
He will stick to arods financial planning. It must be hard from going from NBA Star Joe Smith to regular guy Joe Smith.
