This is the next hyped HBO show, I guess. Probably will be good. Here's the trailer:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eX3u0IlBBO4

It's based on some movie from the ancient year of 1973.

I've heard it's had tremendous production problems.

I'm expecting a shitshow.

Of course it is. Hollywood has been bereft of any new ideas for years.

Yul Brynner was great.

He was creepy as hell in that movie. I can't wait to see how they butcher this classic.

They'll butcher it just like everything else they try to repackage.

The list is long and sucky.

Probably looking forward to this new series more than any other this fall. I have pretty high hopes for it but HBO has a winning percentage with new
series probably around the 33% mark if that. This one they have a lot invested in so I hope it works.

I saw the preview while watching The Night Of... This looks like a hot steaming pile of trash. Hard pass for me on this one. Let me know if I'm wrong but I think I'm going to be right.

They put out the first four episodes to critics. Reports are the visuals are amazing and most performances good, but the story is slow to non existent till the end of the fourth episode .

HBO has come under fire from Hollywood's biggest union after a casting note calling for actors to agree to "genital to genital touching" was released.

More specifically, the note for Jonathan Nolan's upcoming highly anticipated, futuristic western series Westworld — based on Michael Crichton's (Jurassic Park) 1973 movie of the same name — declared background actors "may be required to perform genital-to-genital touching, simulate oral sex with hand-to-genital touching, contort to form a table-like shape while being fully nude, pose on all fours while others who are fully nude ride on your back [and] ride on someone's back while you are both fully nude," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

I know if I was paying $40,000/day for a fantasy robot experience, I'd definitely want to ride around on a naked robot like a horse all day.

at $40,000/day the robots better have at least 6 useable holes.

Theoretically possible in real life- if you have a micropenis, and/or a knife.

Watched it early this morning. Still kind of digesting it but overall I was happy with the pilot and pretty intrigued.
There are a lot of details that I still need to understand and may give it another watch this week as I was doing
other things while it was playing. Seems to me that this could go in many different directions and I thought the
casting was quite good. I am sure it won't be for everyone but I liked it and like the western setting.

I really liked it. The drama occurring in multiple worlds gives them an opportunity to let this thing ride out for a while.

I don't quite understand the world. The livestock exists physically in a chamber entirely outside the world. They also seem to exist physically inside the world. Yet the world doesn't really physically exist. It is a mental manipulation (as I understand it) of both the livestock and the people who travel to the world.

Too much bad nudity.

I liked the first episode. Of course now I think just about everyone is an android outside of Anthony Hopkins and Ed Harris. GD, I think it was clear the world does exist in reality. You have that outside smoking scene with the woman and the English wanker taking place in a Western landscape. I assumed the thing they were looking down on was a camera-type projection of everything in miniature. The basement storage is where they place the defective ones, like an android graveyard.

So the Ed Harris character has been going there for 30 years according to what he says early on. Is he the one putting the bug in the androids?
Maybe because he knows "how the world works" he has some kind of work around in which he can't be killed off? He is an android but has
"evolved" much faster than the others? I will watch it again this week and really absorb some of the dialogue.

I think he likes to get his rape on a little too much for an android. He's real. He's stealing tech. West World is probably a military project and he's a Russian.

I think the corporate facility is just in a very remote location.

A physically existing West World would be very low tech compared to the tech that surrounds them.

I hope we see more about the process of putting the guests into the new world in the upcoming episodes. Looked like we would get at least a glimpse of it based on
the season previews after the episode.

I really liked the pilot episode. So Ed Harris is the original Yul Brenner character?

He's the Gunslinger but I guess he's human.

Not sure about that. Two plausible scenarios I've read is that he might be the original gunslinger who's gained sentience or that he was a cofounder of the park with Hopkins character and they had a falling out.

It can't be a coincidence that he specifically said he's been going there for 30 years and the "critical failure" was 30 years ago. Chekhov's 30 years.

I think it's clear that the fly scenes are illustrating that the androids are evolving, but this post from Reddit sums it up nicely and it's a solid theory on Delores

Quote:
"One thing that stuck with me and I've been thinking about the entire day, and which I finally figured out why it stuck with me is the importance of the fly. And I'm not merely talking about the ending scene.

In the opening scene it's established that the hosts don't react to them as one crawls across Delores' eye.

Then there's the piece of dialogue about how a host could never hurt a human, they couldn't even hurt a fly. This obviously seems like a setup for the ending scene but there's an even more important scene about it, the one where the sheriff starts to malfunction when he's escorting the guests. Because what's important here is what happens precisely before he starts malfunctioning. A fly lands on his face.

Why is this important? Because of what is being discussed about the hosts in other scenes about the reveries allowing them to pick up small touches/details in human behavior and imitate them so they appear more lifelike, such as the hooker from the saloon rubbing her lips and the sheriff, when fixed, combing his mustache with his fingers. So to bring that back to the fly, what is the most subconscious, instinctive move a person makes when a fly lands on them? They swat it, and I think we all know that we do it without even thinking about it. So what happens when the hosts constantly register the guests doing this? They want to start imitating it, but to do so they would intent on killing the fly, and this goes directly against their core programming. And thus, unaware to the programmers, they have created a paradox in their system, one that is causing them to glitch.

This brings a lot more meaning to the end scene because it doesn't just mean that Dolores' has somehow overcome the glitch, but this means that her AI is evolved far ahead of the other hosts in the park. And we already know why this is because of what is said about her towards the end, namely that she is the oldest host in the park. Which means she contains more reveries than any other host in the park, the same reveries that stand at the core of the hosts' changing behavior.

So we really already know why and how she has overcome her programming, and this leads me to theorize that she is in fact so far ahead of the other hosts that she is evolved even far beyond what the programmers think is going on, and that she has been playing along for a while now."

Edit: and here's the comment after it:

Quote:
Fun fact, after 5 months of inactivity on reddit Jonathan Nolan posted a vague reply to a thread in /r/Showerthoughts: "Boy have we got a show for you!"

The title of that thread: "I'm not scared of a computer passing the turing test... I'm terrified of one that intentionally fails it."

I'd take that as 100% confirmation that what you're saying is going to happen.
