I'm surprised we haven't seen more movies like this over the past decade and especially over the last five years.

We have more than enough escapism at the theater. There is very little about the despondence of the middle class, which is clearly reality.

on a related note, I think the last quarter of this year is going to be a Hollywood FU to the cops. I saw two coming attractions taken from different perspectives.

One started showing two AA police officers sitting and talking about their loyalties. I started thinking about how great this subject matter would be as there are plenty of black officers across the country. Their everyday life is almost never told. Instead it looks like this movie looks like it will devolve into stereotypes about bad cops (not the black cops, mind you).

The second was a movie about a black couple being pulled over that again devolves into stereotype with the police officer being killed. The couple becomes heroes.
