On now....Channel 363, WFLDM....LeVar Burton plays Ron!

I was so proud when the Sox got him.

Edit: On YouTube, too.

I remember that movie.

I liked him and was way too young to understand drug addictions. Even during the Pirates scandal and with Willie Wilson and Keith Hernandez, I just thought they were hurt. I guess I had a progressive understanding even at that early age.

I really enjoyed the stolen base era of baseball, before we were all enlightened that getting an extra base and making the pitcher anxious for the next couple of batters was a bad thing. I was fat and slow but I loved guys like Ricky Henderson and Ron Leflore stealing 100 bases each year.

Most of those guys piled up the hits, too. Wilson had like 230 one year, and they all hit .300 in their primes. And it seemed like ten guys were routinely stealing 70 or more. When Henderson broke Brock's single-season record, I saved the paper. I was certain that this was historic.

I teared up as a kid when the Tigers fans berated the young LeFlore. I was eight and also not clear about drug addiction. I still resent the adults in the room who were not as emotionally moved as I was.

Was certainly a more exiting brand of baseball than watching guys walk, strikeout , or hit HR’s.

For the life of me people like Bernsie can talk and talk and talk about metrics and I still wonder why players like these are not still around and thriving. Kenny Lofton for the love of God.

It’s like Dolphin mentioned above , the one thing that the really.smart.baseball.peoples logarithm’s can’t measure is the stress having a prolific base stealer on does to the pitcher .

This book and Rocky Bleier's autobiography "Fighting Back" were two of my favorite sports books as a kid. I remember reading One in a Million and having it be a really eye-opening experience, i was probably only 9 or 10 at the time reading about this guys heroin addiction. I think I still have that book in a box somewhere, I kind of want to go find it now.

You can't measure pitching performance pre- and post-steals?

You can’t measure whether or not the runner on first bothered the pitcher enough to where he grooved a pitch to the number 2 hitter and he jacked it . No stolen base involved .

You can analyze how pitchers perform with "threatening" vs "non-threatening" runners on base. Why wouldn't that be sufficient?

Back in those days, I stayed in the neighborhood homerun race Willie Wilson style with inside the park jobs. All I could do was pick em up and put em down. My first actual jack led to the pitcher being ridiculed for the last two weeks of that summer.
